Ferenc Szálasi: Hungarian Fascist Leader of Arrow Cross Executed for War Crimes
from World History: True Stories of the 20th Century · host World History
Ferenc Szálasi, Hungarian fascist leader of the Arrow Cross Party, ruled Hungary under Nazi control and was executed for war crimes after World War II. Ferenc Szálasi, the notorious leader of Hungary’s fascist Arrow Cross Party, played a central role in one of the darkest chapters of World War II. Installed by Nazi Germany as the “Leader of the Nation” in October 1944, Szálasi oversaw a brutal regime that collaborated fully with the occupying forces. Under his command, Hungary’s last remaining Jewish community was subjected to horrifying violence and mass deportation. Szálasi’s rise was rooted in extreme nationalist and antisemitic ideologies. A former military officer, he was inspired by both Italian Fascism and German National Socialism. In the 1930s, he became increasingly active in far-right politics, eventually founding the Arrow Cross Party, which called for a racially pure, authoritarian Hungary. Though briefly imprisoned, Szálasi emerged from jail to lead the newly empowered Arrow Cross government following a German-backed coup that ousted Admiral Horthy. During Szálasi’s short but devastating reign, Arrow Cross militias terrorized the streets of Budapest. Thousands of Jews were rounded up, shot along the banks of the Danube, or forced into death marches toward Austria. Approximately 70,000 Jews perished during this final phase of the Holocaust in Hungary. Szálasi's regime also conscripted civilians into hopeless battles, depleted the country’s resources in support of Nazi Germany, and oversaw arbitrary executions. After the Soviet siege of Budapest began, Szálasi fled west and was eventually captured by American troops. Extradited to Hungary, he was tried for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and high treason. On 12 March 1946, he was executed by hanging alongside senior Arrow Cross officials. His death symbolized the collapse of Hungary's fascist ambitions and marked a final reckoning for a regime responsible for immense suffering. This documentary explores Szálasi’s life, ideology, rise to power, and the horrifying consequences of his leadership. Through historical footage, survivor accounts, and detailed analysis, the video offers a sobering look at one of the most radical and destructive figures of wartime Europe. This episode is part of the series High Ranking Fascist Collaborators: Politicians.Watch the full documentary and explore hundreds of historical films at:WorldHistory.tv
