Ferry Fire Claims 35 Lives in Philippines | Miami News

A catastrophic fire tore through a Philippine passenger ferry near Palawan, killing at least 35 and leaving 54 missing as smoke and heat trapped survivors. Departing Manila, the vessel became a charred wreck within moments, with chaos erupting as panicked passengers trampled each other for life jackets. Two Chilean tourists survived and are recovering, while families grapple with identifying remains. Despite a manifest of 134, only 43 were rescued — and two names were later confirmed as never having boarded. The tragedy underscores systemic maritime risks in the Philippines, where aging ships and weak safety enforcement make ferries perilous lifelines across the archipelago.
