FF 485: The 10 Podcast Commandments: What I've learned in 10 Years of Podcasting

from Lions of Liberty Network · host Lions of Liberty

Today I’m sharing the wisdom I've gained over 10 years of podcasting. Learn from my mistakes, so you don't have to. The 10 Podcast Commandments: Consistency. Publish your episodes on the same day and at the same time every week.  Systems. Create a system for content creation and publishing your audio/video episodes that is repeatable. You’ll burn out quickly if it’s not. Sound quality. There is no better way to turn people off than to have an echo, background noise or inconsistent volume on your audio levels. Sure, everyone has tech problems every once and awhile, but don’t make it a recurring theme. Respect. Give your audience and guest respect. They are both giving you their time. It’s a huge privilege. This is why 1 and 3 are so important. Don’t try to be Michael Malice and shit on your listeners. You aren’t that good.  Have fun. It’s easier to continue week in and week out if you genuinely enjoy what you’re doing.  Gratitude for the OG podcasters. The old timers created this market demand that you’re enjoying the fruit from. Study their shows, support their work and thank them.  Ignore Downloads. Don’t focus on downloads or views right away. And when you do look, keep things in perspective. If you’re frustrated with only 50 downloads, focus on serving those 50 people the best you can.  Love your podcast. Create a podcast that you would listen to. Would you dedicate 30 or 60 minutes to listen to your own show?  Don’t spam your show. It doesn’t work to grow your audience and it’s annoying. I’ve never listened to a new podcast because I saw it spammed in a FB group.  Find a mentor. The best way to do this is to find a podcaster that you respect and deliver them some value. Find them a guest, create a Reel from their show to share or provide some feedback and tell them how much you appreciate their show.  Subscribe to John’s Finding Freedom Show solo feed to listen to “Pursuit of Freedom,” which is a new podcast series where John shares the highs and lows of his entrepreneurial journey.
