Field Notes on Modern Repression 10/8/26 - These field notes actually began when I was wrongfully detained in Luxembourg, in a locked down detention facility where I only had access to a computer for about an hour a day. By the time I logged in, logged off, and they came to get me, I had about 45 minutes online. So during that very short period of time, I had to communicate what I was seeing, what I was thinking, what was happening, and what I was trying to figure out. That’s really how these stream-of-consciousness videos came into being. And when I got out and was repatriated to the United States, I continued doing them because they gave me a way to keep communicating even under pressure, and even when I was facing obstruction and resistance. It gave me a way to continue putting information out there when I wasn’t necessarily in a position to sit down and produce long-form writing. So these field notes are essentially my thoughts and observations in real time: the patterns I am seeing, the questions I am asking, the inferences I am making, the hypotheses I am developing, and the things I don’t yet understand. They’re not etched in stone. They are a means for me to document circumstances contemporaneously, as well as to provide investigators, journalists, researchers, and others with something they can take from there.
