Field of mirrors leads to dispatchable energy, storage, and more

from The Green Insider Powered by eRENEWABLE

Christie Obiaya CEO joined Heliogen two-and-a-half years ago to help advance the energy transition by using concentrated solar.  On episode 210 learn how a field of mirrors called heliostats create dispatchable energy by using the sun’s heat to their benefit.  With the access energy being stored in molten salt, hot rocks, and steam accumulators, the electric power generated can go directly to a facility or go to the grid.  This is a good alternative form of power for mining locations.  Heliogen is taking existing technology and enhancing it.  Their enhancements allow concentrated solar to do what it hasn’t done before. Christie goes on to tell The Green Insider who their first two projects are with – the city of Lancaster, CA. and Woodside Energy from Australia.    More about Christie Obiaya Christie brings deep operational and financial expertise, coupled with experience growing and managing energy and infrastructure development and sustainable technologies. Prior to joining Heliogen, Christie served as head of strategy and chief financial officer for Bechtel Energy’s global energy business unit.  She holds engineering and business degrees from MIT. About Heliogen Heliogen is a renewable energy technology company focused on eliminating the need for fossil fuels in heavy industry and powering a sustainable future. The company’s AI-enabled, modular concentrated solar technology aims to cost-effectively deliver near 24/7 carbon-free energy in the form of heat, power, or green hydrogen fuel at scale – for the first time in history. In November 2020, TIME included Heliogen’s HelioHeat technology on its Best Inventions of 2020 list. In April 2020, Fast Company selected Heliogen as a recipient of a 2020 World Changing Ideas Award for its technology. The company won the Energy category. Heliogen was created at Idealab, the leading technology incubator founded by Bill Gross in 1996. For more information about Heliogen, please visit Heliogen.com or @HeliogenInc.
