This is the Best Hang Podcast featuring Max Kerman, Shane Cunningham, and I am Mike Bierman. I need to know, Mike, did you wear a new baseball hat? Oh, yeah. It seems like it says the Russ & Co.

cocktail bar. Did you purchase this drunk in L.A.? That is not a new hat. No, I'm going to go for this.

No, how dare you purchase this drunk in L.A.? I purchased this drunk in Prince Edward County. I was with our dear friend Al. I was with my family.

Our friend Al and Sarah live there. And so I was like, hey, I'm in town. You want me to have a drink? I thought I was setting up a rollicking L.A.

string. Let's get the rollicking L.A. Because basically, we've deliberately not really spoken to each other since you got home. You guys were from L.A.

I had to go to Nashville for a couple of days. And we just didn't really talk to each other. You called me yesterday to talk to other stuff. And I said, don't talk about anything that happened in L.A.

Except for the things that we can't talk about on pod. But anyway, tell us about the big 50th birthday party for Tim McAuliffe. Nathan Fielder showed up. He was there.

Did you not know that? You know what Mike said yesterday? He didn't say anything else. I thought he said it was the biggest thing to say.

Didn't we? Yeah. I'm not putting it in the text. I'm just pointing myself.

Ash and Max had FOMO because they were like, give us updates. We're at a party we're engaged. We're not really on our phones. And you guys were like, we would like to know updates.

I think I got a hot take. Oh, I don't think I experienced FOMO. I just don't think I experienced FOMO. Well, why would you?

Like, if anything, you probably have. Oh, I saw a guy of mine. He called it like POMO or something where it was like the exact opposite. Where you like, you're blessed if you don't have to fucking go out and go to some of every day of your life.

Like, it's work for you. Yeah, you're totally right. Yeah, FOMO. Yeah.

Wait a second. So you're telling me. I feel like there's things you see that people are doing. Never.

He'll do it next week. He'll do it better. That's true. You're probably right.

Anyway, back to the party. So, yeah, we show up at the party instantly. Well, I'm not wearing my Nathan Fielder hat. Remember, I said I was going to wear it.

I asked Matt Unsworth, who was our host, when we were out there. And he said, I wouldn't wear it. So I wore my I think you should leave hat to kind of jealousy trap him a little bit. I show up.

What time was this? I think we pre-drank and maybe we showed up at like nine. Did you just pre-drank just because you're nervous? Or just because of something to do?

I think it was something to do. I was definitely nervous. So we had some beers. Oh, yeah, the pre-drank.

Well, because we met up with a former host of the heist, Simon. Simon was friends with Anzi. So we had dinner with him and his wife and Anzi. I can't remember the place.

It was cool. That was kind of the pre-hang. I'd eat and go to the party. Worst service ever at that place.

I don't want to throw it under the bus. You know, the service was just so bad. But it was like an outdoor place, kind of a German place. Yeah, it was a big sign of beer.

But like Anzi didn't get a bun with his sausage. It's the whole story. And then they took a friend of the gum. He's running a microphone.

He can't get a sausage. Okay, anyway, we show up at the party and Malcolm McDowell is sitting on the couch. I'm friends with Max. Did you say that to him?

He said, who dat? What's funny is on the plane, I was listening to, you know, I'm a Bill Maher podcast listener. I listened to it ironically. And Malcolm McDowell was the guest on the podcast I was listening to.

So I'm like, oh my God, we got to talk to him. We have this in. I go, Mike, I've got the best in that I've just listened to on the podcast, but I'm the least likely to approach someone. So I'm like, Mike, how do we play this?

And I also have a fandom with him because I'm a huge fan of Star Trek Generations, which is the film where he plays the villain Soren and I talk to the pod. That's what I was going to say. Oh, you were going to say that. I thought you were saying.

I was so sorry of how it happened. Anyway, Mike, take it over. You do it. No, I thought you were just going to ask me.

No, go ahead. I'm not passive aggressive. I want you to do it. Just being aggressive.

So anyway, we're talking. And obviously, you know, if you're like a film fan, you're into that Kubrick film, Clot of Orange, that's sort of like when you were young in the film. That's an iconic sort of image if you've ever seen it. He's obviously much older now.

He's in Son of a Critch that Tim does. So anyway, I was like, I want to tell him that I watched Generations a hundred times in high school. And then I quoted him in my yearbook, which was Times of Fire, which we burned. I did it ironically, like an overly sort of dramatic quote.

And then, you know, make him or whatever. But so I was like, I want to ask him for a photo. And then where is this? Because I feel like we're going to do it together.

And then. Well, I said, OK, Mike, we're at an L.A. party. It might be a little taboo to take photos with celebrities.

Are you a fan or your friend? Well, the whole game in L.A. is you pretend you're a peer because everyone has some connection to the industry. I'm going to a bar and our bartender worked with Kanye on his album for 30 days.

And he's in a dispute about music because he also wrote a song for somebody else. I don't know about my Uber driver last time. Everybody. Everybody I talked to you.

You cannot feel like you're cooler than anyone. Like, I get paid 10,000 a month based on this TikTok song. But anyway, let's play cool, Mike. We can get one photo because this is like a living legend.

He might not be around much longer than his 80s. So we can get away with this photo. So Mike, you get in there. You tell your story.

And then we all get one photo. Mike's like, yeah, yeah, for sure. But he has this big time of the fire, which we burn. He's telling Malcolm McDowell.

He's getting like really into it. Malcolm's into it. I'm like, Mike's not going to get the photo with us. And Mike's like, OK, let's get a photo.

But I'm not being waved over. So Mike gets a photo with him singular. And then he goes, oh, my friends want a photo with you. So we did do the.

I got brought Shane into the thing because he mentioned the podcast and Shane said his Bill Maher thing. I will say the reason I kind of got flustered is because they stood there in the living room. He was there with his son. So they stood up and they were kind of heading.

I didn't know if they were wrapping it up early. So I kind of felt like I stopped him on the way out. So I suddenly felt like I was. I just had a more reason to only get one photo.

You're right. You're right. But I got to my Star Trek story and we were connecting. So I'm like, I'm like a lineup.

And John Popliss is behind me. He's in line for the photo too. And now I'm like, Mike got an individual photo. I'm not getting like a one with me and Pops.

I'm getting an individual photo. So I tell him my Bill Maher story. And Bill Maher fights in every podcast with his guests. Like Bill Maher's hilarious.

That's why I listen to it. And I'm like, oh, you were on Bill Maher's podcast. You were great. He's like, I fucking hated it.

He's like, I fucking hated it. He's like, I thought he was a cinephile because I got this big fight on movies. So I was watching it. So like, that's hilarious.

So I get a photo with, I get Pops to take the photo. Huge mistake. Number one rule when you're taking a celebrity photo. You do a little shutter.

You take a bunch. You take at least two or three. You just sort of person has options because you're locked into that photo. For Mike, I took like a hundred.

Yeah. Yeah. Fucking look, you look great in every photo. The worst photo of all time.

Pops takes one. He's like, what? Like, this is Pops bullshit. And I take the best photos of Pops.

When he didn't even have a cool story. He just talks to Miguel, gets a photo. I take like a hundred of Pops. He looks great.

And then I tell Alex, I'm like, oh my God. We just, Malcolm McDowell, send me a photo. And I was too embarrassed to even send a photo of me. And Malcolm McDowell, you're on your right finger.

So I sent a Pops. But then since we did this big like scene at this party and Unsworth even came over, he's like, guys, what are you doing? Well, at least you didn't see your picture. I know, but everyone else knew.

And I knew if I go up to Fielder and get a photo, I'm the fan guy. So I'm like, I can't even look at him, Pops. Pops, I'm not even going to look at him. He's like, look, just look.

No one can just look at him. I'm like, I'm a good passer in basketball. I've got a good peripheral vision. I can see him perfectly.

I'm actually am looking at him. He goes, make eye contact. So I look over. Fielder's looking right at me.

And then I do the thing. Like when you see a girl, you look and then you look away. But he's like, I kind of got to look away. And then Fielder knew I was a loser right at that moment.

And I could not go anywhere near him. Yeah. So it was very cool to be in his presence. Well, you didn't talk to him?

Of course not. Come on. You didn't talk to him? I'm not an idiot.

No. Jesus Christ. I've heard stories. People talk to them.

They make a fool of themselves. And then they feel bad. Because Fielder doesn't suffer fools. I'm the biggest fool fool.

You got a strategy, though. You know, you're going to talk about what a big fanboy you were. What happened to him? Mike threw it off.

If you've been listening, the Malcolm McDowell thing ruined my confidence. Not wearing my Fielder hat. Those two combinations, I had no in all of a sudden. If I was wearing my Nathan Fielder hat, it would have been cool.

Were you just kind of keeping eyes on him the entire time? Yeah. And his wife or girlfriend was there. I should have hit on her.

That would have made it. It just thought crossed my mind. But I didn't want to, you know, get on Fielder's bad side even worse. Jessica Pari showed up from Hot Tub Time Machine.

I'm sure she's done other works. Yeah. She plays Don Draper's second wife. Oh.

So that was very cool. And then we were schmoozing with all these bigwigs. And luckily, I don't really know anybody in the industry. So I didn't know they're bigwigs.

But the creator of Arrested Development. Oh, Mr. Witz. Do you know?

Well, I know he's friends with him. Have you met him before? Never met him before. Very Dan Hamilton energy.

Oh, yeah. You mentioned that. Yeah. So him and Pops are getting so tight.

Like Pops knows fucking everything. I've only seen one episode of Arrested Development. Really? Yeah.

So it's really hard for me to connect. You should help him with that, actually. I did. I told him.

No, I'm telling you. I'm just trying to throw in like the odd joke here and there. Would you laugh? Would you give him?

Yeah, you would. No, it was good. I was actually being mildly charismatic at this party. How late were you guys there?

5 a.m.? 5 a.m.? No. It's supposed to be a birthday party.

Was Tim still going? Yeah, Tim's the best. Tim has way of unlimited party abilities. And in fact, when we left, he's like, pool party tomorrow.

You guys are going to be here. I'm like, he's like, I don't have an Olympic-sized pool. But you guys can't. So I'm getting pumped for this pool party thinking it's actually going to happen.

And then even though we went to bed at like 5, I woke up at 8 and threw my swimsuit on. So I'm so excited to go back to that energy. And of course, it never happened. Damn.

Yeah. Yeah, it was a good time. That's amazing. Sounds like it was to live up to the hype in your head.

Jess is a lovely wife. His wife is incredible. Jess is amazing. And just like, you know, I think what's cool about like a big birthday is it's like the culmination of all these people you've met in your life.

And it's a reflection of you, you know, the company that you keep. And he's surrounded by like, you know, sure, there's successful people there, things or whatever. But they were all like cool and fun and nice and a great hang and just like genuine in a way that was like, oh, this is like a great sort of collection of people which reflects well on, you know, the person I want to celebrate, which is him. And what's good about Tim is, especially at a party like this, we're trying to make connections and I'm a really bad introductor person.

I'll never approach anyone. Tim kind of every 10 minutes walks around, does a lab. You have to meet Shane. And he'll do that thing.

But he did it to every single person. And like clockwork, every 10 minutes, he'd do another lab and connect everyone and knew how to get the party going. Did he invite you to Europe this summer? No.

I've heard about these offers. We've got to go to Europe. Downtown Europe. Downtown Europe.

It's great. Downtown Europe. So much fun. If you're a business owner, then you know they call it running a business for a reason.

EQ Bank knows it too. Knows you're running the team, running the show, and you're definitely running the numbers. EQ Bank's business account is built to help you make a bank. It has no monthly fees and earns high interest.

So you can keep running. What really matters. Sign up today at EQ Bank.ca slash business. Okay, let's talk about the other pilots of LA.

Because you guys were there, what, Friday? Yeah, we set up meetings. Some people might know, you know, we created a couple shows. And because of that, we now have some representation.

So because we're going to Los Angeles, we set up some meetings. So basically, it was like a workshop to go down and talk about different things we want to do, which was really fun. Went to some lots. But one of the funnest days, I thought, was the day that we went and saw that Sebastian Stan movie.

We had a day to kill. It was like a random Monday, because our meetings were all loaded up on the Tuesday. So we went and saw, what's it called? The different man, I think it's called?

Yeah, it was Sebastian Stan. It was Sebastian Stan. He's like the hot guy. He's also the hot guy.

It's an awesome girl. What's his movie? Oh, he played Tommy Lee in the Pam Tommy movie. Okay, go ahead.

He's in like the Marvel movies and shit. But anyway, this is like a real indie, sort of like, you know, creative art house movie almost. Highly recommend it. Yeah, so we go see it in the Grove in LA.

And then there's like this great big kind of food court. So we had a bite before, watched a movie, and then after we were like, I think it's time to kill. And Matt was doing Matt, who was our gracious host, an amazing writer on dessert and all that stuff. He hasn't worked here in the day, so we're like, well, let's stay out of his hair and we'll go see a movie.

And it's still only like, whatever, I think it's like a 10.45 movie. So we came out and it was like, it's 12.30. We're like, all right, what do you want to do? And so there was this little, like, hilarious, like, potly bar in the Grove that had little stools in a bar in the corner.

So we just like, I'll just go get some Guinness or so we go and start drinking. And there's this old guy sitting, like, two, one day at LA, baby. So he's sitting there and he's, he's kind of talking to the bartender. Did you hear what he was saying?

What was the original thing? So to the bartender, to justify his day drinking, he's like, you know, I normally don't come to bars like this, but I like to come and observe and absorb my surroundings. And then he goes like this, like a fake whisper move with a hand over the face. He goes, I'm an actor.

But he said it loud enough so like we could hear and he kept like making eyes at us. So he starts like, now we're engaged. And he kind of reminds me a lot of like my dad. Like he started like talking to people, he's kind of singing songs, he's being charismatic, but it's like kind of right on the line.

It's like Al Pacino. Totally. So he starts talking to us and we're talking about our kids and getting married. And I was like, what's his end going to be?

Because he's dying to fucking talk to us. He's trying to think, he's like, okay, they're wearing hats. They're trying to think, like, she wants hair day in a boy band or they're too old. So he's like, I love Lucy tattoo.

He's like, what's the end there? He's like, what's that? I knew Lucy LaBalle. Like, I knew Lucy LaBalle.

And then he's like, my daughter's name is Lucy and our kids. He's talking about his kids going to University of Santa Barbara or whatever. And so we're talking, it turns out this guy is an actor. I made it for Kanye.

No, no, that was the part. So this guy's at the same place. Oh, yeah. He's a young, cool guy.

Like he was just on his journey. Yeah, anyway, that guy was cool. We didn't openly share that, like, oh, we're, you know, we created shows. We're down here doing kind of business.

We don't say any of that. For all they know, we're just three goofy Canadians with kids and wives. That's all we're really talking about. So this guy eventually, like, he tells us about how he won the audition to be the voiceover for, like, Scarface when he had to dub it for TV.

So he'll take out all the swears. So he's doing his, like, Al Pacino. He's like, come on. Like, the Scarface Al Pacino.

So he's like, so I'm doing my meditation. I'm like, hey, you bitch of shit. You fucking bitch of shit. I can't do it.

But he's doing this aloud. It's like, 2 p.m. Bigelow directed him in something. And he's giving us a ton of stories.

He's like, I didn't get shot on another nanny. Like, oh, yeah. He finds it. His highlight reel on YouTube.

He had a cute. Oh, he's a legit guy. So we're like, we're looking at the IMDb. We're talking.

He's pretty good on the nanny. He makes us watch the whole five asses. He gets a granddressure's ass in the nanny. He kisses her.

That was like my crush. I'm like, oh, my God. I do respect this man. And eventually, and then the bartender starts talking.

He's asking what we're doing down there. Then it kind of starts to unfurl. Like, OK, we're in TV. But yeah, and anyway, do you remember at one point when he was talking about Scarface?

Because he thought we were just like, Canadians were excited to be in LA. He's like, yeah, you don't believe me. We're like, we believe you. He goes, no, no, no, don't worry.

I'll be back. He pulls out his royalty check. It's all wrinkled. He does this a hundred times a day, probably.

And like, shows us. Like, yeah, we believe you. But it was like, did you know what the rest of the day from? It was for his only work that he did on Scarface.

Because Pacino couldn't do it. So he filled in for Pacino because he does such a good imitation. But he made $5.66 as a royalty check. But he uses it to prove to people that he actually did this.

We're like, James, we look up on IMDb. We just, we know. And then Bulge's come up and then John's showing them clips. Made them watch all of Bulge's.

sketch the whole show so i'm just like oh fuck i'm listening you guys are at a bar in the grove and the bartender's watching it on john's eyebrows no he showed the bartender the sketch and then he showed the al pacino guy the full thing but i can tell he doesn't like it but you know not that he doesn't like the show he doesn't like that we're in the industry too and we're kind of like the yeah and then he doesn't talk to us the rest of the time and he's just taking his job yeah and then i go sit beside him like why are you talking to us he put his arm around me kind of got me in a headlock he's like i fucking love this industry he started just saying how he loves industry kind of ignore my question i'm like oh okay so i leave i go grab a sandwich i come back he's even more isolated now he's like back to us and he's like a little bit further away and then he just has us and security came over again they were gonna kick us out if we didn't be quiet yeah and then we went and met uh matt king over at soho house that was a little subdued because uh we were out that was like we have to chamber during the day at the grove to be honest so we really had to rally to you know so by 7 p.m you're kind of exhausted and james was such an entertaining hang like it really was my favorite type of this is so random it wouldn't have happened like we're just going with the flow it was every part of the day is great movie at 10 45 yeah and then and then all we did all meetings which were fantastic at the different lots that was really cool just connecting with people and uh that was great just we always had like sleepover vibe at night time did you guys it was amazing oh great i was like i was not enough space or not i had like my own room no he had this whole room there was no animals there either you said it was gonna be dog and cat that that didn't even help no it was very comfortable it was like cool too it wasn't too hot like the windows were open it was an arcade game and it just kind of shot us back to a time where you just hang with your friends 24 7 do you guys think that you're like i could do this rest of my life oh you have your family of course you have your family of course we might have to i will say that it did feel very much like yeah it's not really but like kind of what reminded me of is like you can't really go back like i'm like this has been awesome for four or five days and it's like i'm around my friends were getting up every day what we do today you don't you're time millionaires in a lot of ways but then i'm like oh like i don't think i want to live this way now i want to go back to my family and my house like once every couple months exactly like it's great it's like mcdonald's once in a while not every day uh-huh but yeah no i did i felt like i went back though i felt like i was a kid at a sleep back in time hanging with my friends like we we played this what would you do for five hundred thousand dollars it's so funny it's great it seemed like such a stupid game that we weren't gonna get into but everyone was so into it i was on the floor actually like i was on the floor like would you do this would you let your wife sleep with this person like like indecent proposal stuff and then mike gives up and he gives a speech on the sanctimonial marriage like how could you when you make a vow and he gives his like beautiful speech and then i'm like okay and heads to bed and pops us asleep and mike and i went for an hour another hour what marriage was worth i'm like five hundred thousand dollars you don't think danica's gonna do it he's absolutely not so anyway i was at the fire we're all around the fire for like our families so i'm like danica like i hate to ask this but i gotta know the answer for five hundred thousand dollars would you get with travis kelsey and she's like i would pay him yeah great lie also it wasn't travis kelsey in our scenarios it was like i know i don't want to say but um travis kelsey i should do that for free i you know i but it was very it reminded me of saving shane especially as people start to peel off like i was like well that's not going to bed and then pops pass it was like it was a stack of your mansion in 2007 oh my god before we went down to absolutely not even just healthy passionate debate what about the stupidest shit like if elf had any merit yeah we had the biggest argument i was like because you know what started that arrest development started that argument because i thought it was like this elevated version of comedy james kind of being contrary to the arrest development and i said something about married with children in a way that was like i was kind of putting it down and he's like i fucking love i'm like i like it it's that time you're like it's rubbish anyway it was just it really felt like it went back in time to when it was like all you did was hang out with your buds and talk about stupid shit oh that's i want you guys to go to la no no no no i do have a sleepover max i do have a sleepover and i get them whenever i want all the time and uh i do i don't know it makes me so thrilled for you i want you guys to go to la once a month i'll come sometimes when it's handy for me once a month you gotta go down for four days at a time yeah yeah maybe once and four times a year i think that's correct yeah that would be perfect wouldn't it yeah well in our lives who knows how we might have to be there more often anyway yeah the meetings went very good like we have a perfect team like popolis who sometimes i'm like oh fucking sometimes socially is hitting this he fucking he murdered it in these meetings because all these guys even like a super handsome executive we talk to look like jason priestley or whatever he was a nerd these executives they all love tv nerds and he let's say some obscure show like oh this obscure show like no one will know it mentions it i love that show i just watched that too next question really and he'd like quiz him a little bit but pops fucking knew everything it was this perfect little ecosystem i kind of just sat there but i'm like mike knew all the shit that pops didn't and like yeah remember the guy quizzed us i'm like i bet you don't know uh who started star trek and mike sitting right there he's like lucille ball yeah but what else did she create i'll give you one clue mike's like mission impossible yes but it was very impressive just being around both of them and like seeing how those meetings went it's also good mix well and the one is executive that we've met that who's like our manager was telling us not in zoom like on a debrief how much he loved shane like she called uh he called her manager and was like i love the shane guy but that was at the party when i was actually in charisma yeah but you're right the ecosystem works like everyone kind of plays a part but yeah john really connected he spoke like there's a lot of these executives especially like someone mature what's like where he's a creator and probably obsessed with all sorts of tv they really sort of connected on that level it was good man it was fun it was a great time you know and then yeah we got home but what were you doing this is the perfect episode this is the perfect episode this is and we'll get out the door in two days i got to book club natty's birthday uh and i got to see my childhood friend david lawrence and he's the toronto blue jays team doctor and uh he chastised me for getting the pot i'm hearing about the paris olympics right now come on guys a little faster so we're gonna get this one out real soon this one's for david then this one's for david yeah dr dave dr dave all right good morning hey that's it that's all that is our episode thank you so much for listening i love doing these in person guys thank you uh guys great you
