Fight for Iowa - Bill Reichardt

In 1951 under head coach Leonard Rafensburger Iowa won 2 games and was winless in the Big Ten at 0-5-1. Yet a tough, contact loving kid from Iowa City won the Chicago Tribune's Silver Football, symbolic of the league's MVP. Fullback Bill Reichardt ran over most anyone who dared try and tackle him. At a little over 200 pounds, Reichardt was Iowa's MVP, All American and All Big Ten in 1951 after starring at Iowa City High. Today he remains prominently in the Guinness world book of records as the only athlete in any sport to be voted conference most valuable player for a team that didn't win a game. To displace any thought that the candidate pool in 1951 was lacking, among those Reichardt beat out for the award was Ohio State's Vic Janowitz, the 1950 Heisman trophy winner. It was that kind of grit and determination that would propel Bill Reichardt to an amazing career as a businessman, politician and the spark that reignited the Iowa-Iowa State football series in the 1970's.
