from UVA and NOVA Legends Podcasts® · host Julian Brown
Kevin Edds, a '95 graduate of the University, enthusiastic UVA sports fan, and the filmmaker behind the acclaimed 2015 documentary "Wahoowa: The History of Virginia Cavalier Football," recently joined me to delve into the rich football legacy of the 'Hoos. UVA, the first college football team in the South, revolutionized the sport with the forward pass and made history in integrated games in the South as early as 1947, playing against Harvard. Reflecting on the golden era of UVA football under the leadership of Coach George Welsh, Kevin reminisced about stars like iconic quarterback Shawn Moore, who led the team to a number 1 ranking and the Sugar Bowl in 1990. During movie production, Kevin had the privilege of connecting with Shawn and legends such as Bill Dudley, Chris Slade, and Chris Long, exploring UVA gridiron history with remarkable breadth. Our conversation extended to the post-Welsh years, and we even discussed the prospects of the 2024 season under Tony Elliott. It was a delightful discussion with a close friend, celebrating the timeless tales and the heroes that have shaped the remarkable journey of Virginia Cavalier Football.
