Film Review: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (USA 2014) by Matt Reeves

from Second Opinion - Films and Society · host Our Second Opinion

Content:  In this podcast, we discuss “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” (2014), directed by Matt Reeves. This film is the sequel to “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (2011).  We praise the visually impressive portrayal of the apes, especially Andy Serkis' performance as Caesar. However, the plot is clichéd and predictable, with a simplistic good/evil dynamic in contrast to the more complex previous film.  “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” depicts a war between humans and apes, with the apes displaying surprisingly humanized characteristics. Overall, we rate the work as a visual masterpiece with a weakly developed story.  We will gradually review the other parts of this film series as well. The primates believe that humanity has gone extinct due to a deadly flu. However, they are proven wrong when they encounter a small group of humans in the forest.  Caesar attempts to maintain peace, provided the humans adhere to certain rules. However, a chimpanzee who aspires to be leader sabotages Caesar and tries to kill the intruding humans. This provocative act alarms an entire army of human survivors and triggers a war between primates and humans.
