Finding Hope When - I am Pressured
from St Mark Sermons Hosted by St Mark Coptic Orthodox Church
This sermon, delivered on the first Sunday of Great Lent, introduces a new six-week series called "Finding Hope," exploring how Christians can remain anchored in hope amid uncertainty, pressure, temptation, shame, and darkness. Fr Thomas explains that Lent is not a season of gloom but one of joy, purification, healing, and renewal — a time to return to loving God fully and loving one's neighbor. Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, the sermon focuses on the call to "lay up treasures in heaven" rather than on earth, and acknowledges the tension between believing Christ's hardest teachings and the pressure to conform to worldly, self-protective values. Fr Thomas uses two biblical examples of resisting worldly pressure while trusting God: the Apostle Paul, who found hope amid hardship and persecution, and the prophet Daniel, who refused to defile himself with the king's delicacies despite pressure to assimilate. Both maintained integrity by keeping their focus on God rather than their circumstances. The central message is a choice between two paths: conforming to the world or being transformed by God's word (Romans 12:2). Quoting St. John Chrysostom on Scripture's transformative power, the sermon emphasizes that true change comes not from memorizing Scripture but from letting it transform one's life, concluding that hope is found by living a life of integrity, focused above, and choosing transformation over conformity.
