Fire and Flood on the Independence (1853)

The New York Times from April 8, 1853, announced that there was some concern felt about the fate of the Independence: “There was much anxiety felt for the safety of the Vanderbilt steamship Independence, from which nothing had been heard, though she was thirty days beyond her time. She had a large number of passengers on board. She was to have connected with the steamship Northern Light, from New-York, Jan. 20, and was last seen on the 15th of Feb., off Cape St. Lucas. Hopes were entertained that she had put into some intermediate port.
