First Crusade

In this episode, we explore the First Crusade through the dramatic Siege and Battle of Antioch in 1097–1098, a turning point that reshaped the Crusaders’ campaign toward Jerusalem. We examine how the Crusaders captured the heavily fortified city through internal betrayal, only to find themselves trapped by a Muslim relief army under Kerbogha while facing starvation and collapsing morale. The episode also considers the alleged discovery of the Holy Lance, the religious fervor it inspired, and the political divisions among Muslim leaders that helped the outnumbered Crusader forces achieve a decisive victory. Drawing on Christian, Muslim, and Byzantine perspectives, we uncover how military strategy, internal rivalries, and spiritual conviction combined to propel the First Crusade toward the eventual conquest of Jerusalem.
