First Jury Trial Involving Covid Death Underway

Scott Schara, Grace's Dad, gives the background on a landmark trial that began earlier this week (June 2, 2025). The trial of Schara v. Ascension Health, et al addresses the alleged wrongful death of Grace Schara, a 19-year-old with Down syndrome, and the trial results could have broader implications for accountability in U.S. healthcare. This is the first wrongful death jury trial in the country for a death listed as COVID-19 on the death certificate. The unique claims in this case include medical battery and a declaratory judgment ruling regarding the DNR order and the order for three contraindicated medications – Precedex, Lorazepam, and Morphine.
