First responders rescue man trapped in sewer in Northeast Philly

from KYW Newsradio Audio On-Demand

It took police, firefighters, medics and the Philadelphia Water Department to free a man who became stuck in a sewer in the Northeast. It happened along Bustleton Avenue, not far from the Bells Corner shopping plaza, on Wednesday. The neighborhood police advisory council posted video on Facebook of a rescuer prizing open a manhole cover with a pickaxe. Two in the crew — wearing gloves — then pull the shirtless man from the depths. One of them says, “You’ve been down there a long time, huh!” It’s not clear how or, more importantly, why the man got down there in the first place, or how he got the attention of someone to help get him out.
