Scientists just discovered LHS 1140b — the first rocky exoplanet with a detectable atmosphere, located 48 light-years away in the habitable zone. Unlike most rocky planets around M-dwarf stars, which lose their atmospheres, LHS 1140b holds onto a helium-rich envelope, validating computer models and reigniting hope for alien life. Though its helium-heavy atmosphere and extreme tidal locking make it less hospitable for Earth-like life, it may harbor deeper gases like oxygen. While Mars remains our best bet for near-term alien life, this discovery opens new doors in the search for habitable worlds — including K2-18b and the Trappist-1 system.
