Firstfruits - Dethroning King Appetite

from Sermons at the Shed · host Eythan Tibbs

Throughout history, the idol of King Appetite has occupied the throne of human hearts, beginning with Adam and Eve's fateful decision in the Garden of Eden to trust their desires over God's provision. This ancient struggle continues today as we face endless distractions and competing priorities that seek to dethrone Christ from His rightful place in our lives.Jesus didn't suggest fasting as an optional spiritual discipline - He assumed it would be a regular practice for all believers, alongside giving and prayer. In Matthew 6, Christ outlines these three fundamental duties that directly address the primary temptations seeking to rule our hearts. Biblical fasting differs significantly from other religious practices because it focuses on motivation rather than mere ritual. Scripture provides numerous examples of both successful and failed fasts, with the key difference being whether the fast was motivated by genuine pursuit of God or by self-righteousness, manipulation, and empty ritual.True biblical fasting serves as a physical reminder of spiritual hunger, forcing us to worship through weakness and align our physical needs with our spiritual dependence on God. When we fast, we reverse the decision made in Eden by choosing to trust God rather than ourselves for satisfaction. The practice doesn't require complete food abstinence - partial fasts, liquid fasts, or skipping specific meals can all be effective when paired with intentional prayer. The goal isn't to prove spirituality or manipulate divine favor, but to dethrone King Appetite and return Christ to His proper place as the source of our satisfaction and strength.🌐 Websitehttps://theshed.church📘 Facebook / theshedatprovence 📷 Instagram / theshed.church 🎵 TikTok / theshed.church 📺 YouTube / @theshedatprovence
