Five Purposes of the Church - Worship

from Eastview Baptist Church Teaching Podcast · host Eastview Baptist Church

Week 2: Worship – "The Heart of the Church" Text: Matthew 22:37-38 (CSB) "He said to him, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command.’" Thesis Statement: Worship is the church’s highest calling, rooted in wholehearted love for God, expressed in adoration, obedience, and reverence. Teaching Points: Worship as Love (Heart): Worship begins with loving God fully (Deuteronomy 6:5). Worship as Surrender (Soul): True worship involves offering ourselves as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1). Worship as Focus (Mind): Worship requires intentional focus and renewal of the mind (Colossians 3:2). Worship as Renewal (Strength): Worship shifts our focus from weakness to God’s joy (Nehemiah 8:10). Cross-References: John 4:24 – Worship in spirit and truth. Psalm 95:6 – Bow down and worship the Creator. Worship (Love the Lord your God with all your heart) Other References: John 4:23–24 – "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth." Romans 12:1 – "Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship." Psalm 95:6 – "Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker." Revelation 4:11 – "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things." Deuteronomy 6:4–5 – "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength." Hebrews 13:15 – "Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise." Colossians 3:16 – "Sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God with gratitude in your hearts." Practical Applications: Develop daily habits of personal worship (prayer, praise, and scripture). Commit to corporate worship with the church body. Remove distractions that hinder wholehearted worship. Gospel Realization: Christ’s sacrifice grants us direct access to worship the Father in spirit and truth, making every act of worship a response to His love and grace. Closing Prayer:"Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts full of love and adoration. Teach us to worship You with all our heart, soul, and mind. May our lives be living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to You. Draw us closer to You through Your Son, Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen."
