Five ways of removing ill will

from Dhamma Audio · host Sugata Vinayo

“Monks, there are these five ways of removing ill will, by which a monk should completely remove any ill will that has arisen. Which five? Monks, if ill will arises towards a certain person, one should cultivate loving-kindness towards that person; in this way, ill will towards that person should be removed. Monks, if ill will arises towards a certain person, one should cultivate compassion towards that person; in this way, ill will towards that person should be removed. Monks, if ill will arises towards a certain person, one should cultivate equanimity towards that person; in this way, ill will towards that person should be removed. Monks, if ill will arises towards a certain person, one should not pay attention to that person, not give attention to them; in this way, ill will towards that person should be removed. Monks, if ill will arises towards a certain person, one should reflect on the ownership of kamma regarding that person: ‘This venerable one is owner of his kamma, heir to his kamma, born of his kamma, related to his kamma, has his kamma as his refuge; whatever kamma he performs, good or bad, of that he will be the heir’; in this way, ill will towards that person should be removed. These, monks, are the five ways of removing ill will, by which a monk should completely remove any ill will that has arisen.”The Buddha's words, Paṭhamaāghātapaṭivinaya Sutta from Tipitaka_Pali_Reader
