As the 25th anniversary of 9/11 nears, St. Louis is rallying with a moving tribute: over 1,200 volunteers are planting more than 7,600 American flags on Art Hill in Forest Park for the Flags of Valor memorial. Each flag tells a story — honoring the 2,977 victims of 9/11, thousands of war on terror service members, and even 18 fallen in this year’s Operation Epic Fury. First responders are also remembered with their own flags. Volunteers attach photos and dog tags to make each flag personal, turning statistics into faces. The installation begins at dawn on Sept. 5 with 36 teams, blessed by St. Louis Police Chief Robert Tracy — an NYPD officer who responded to the Twin Towers that day. A bald eagle and candlelight ceremony will mark the anniversary. Free and open to all from Sept. 5–13, it’s a powerful call for community remembrance and reflection.
