Flight Response: When We Run from Pain | Healing from Father Wounds (Daddy Issues Ep.42)
from Beloved: Christian Healing for Identity & Self-Worth · host Cherise Rochelle
Have you noticed a pattern of avoidance in your life? Maybe it shows up as withdrawing from relationships, overworking, or avoiding conflict. This is often called the Flight response, a trauma reaction that develops when our emotional needs weren’t met by our father or father figures.Flight is a protective mechanism, not a personal flaw. It helped you survive as a child, but as an adult, it can prevent intimacy, growth, and emotional freedom.Signs you may be experiencing Flight:* 1️⃣ Avoidance of Emotional/Relational Pain* Avoiding conflict or difficult conversations* Withdrawing from relationships or emotional intimacy* Escaping through work, hobbies, social media, or substances* Overplanning or overcommitting to avoid emotional presence* Daydreaming / mental escape → dissociating from painful emotions or situations2️⃣ Over-Functioning & Perfectionism* Perfectionism → working relentlessly to avoid criticism (“If I do everything right, maybe I’ll finally be enough”)* Overworking / over-functioning → taking on too much responsibility in work or relationships (distraction from pain, trying to earn love)* Constant busyness → avoiding stillness or self-reflection3️⃣ Hyper-Vigilance & Anxiety* Hyper-analysing others’ words or behaviour → scanning for danger to avoid criticism or rejection* Catastrophising → expecting the worst to stay “safe”* Difficulty making decisions under pressure → fear of making a wrong move that could trigger rejection or conflict4️⃣ Fear of Exposure / Insecurity* Avoiding success → staying small so as not to attract attention (fear of “shining brighter” than dad, or provoking resentment)* Fear of failure or vulnerabilityCauses:* Inconsistent or absent father presence* Fear of anger or criticism* Emotional invalidation* Feeling overwhelmed by unmet needsBiblical Perspective:* Psalm 34:18 – God is close to the brokenhearted.* Joshua 1:9 – Be strong and courageous; God is with you.* 2 Corinthians 12:9 – God’s power is made perfect in weakness.Healing Steps:* Awareness: notice triggers and patterns.* Root Cause Exploration: reflect on father wounds behind the avoidance.* Small Acts of Courage: practice facing low-risk emotional situations.* Community & Accountability: engage with safe, supportive relationships.* Prayer & God’s Presence: trust God to guide your heart.Reflection Questions:* Where in my life am I avoiding truth or intimacy?* How does this connect to my father or father figures?* What small step can I take today to stay present?* How can I rely on God to strengthen me in moments of fear?Affirmation: I am safe to face what I fear. I am learning to stay present, trust God, and engage with life from a place of wholeness.Recognising Flight is the first step toward freedom. You are not running from life—you are learning to meet it with courage, anchored in God’s love.Closing VersePsalm 56:3 – “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” Even when the Flight response tempts us to run, we can anchor ourselves in God’s presence. If this message resonated with you, I’d love for you to share it with a friend who might need this encouragement.
