Florence's Story

Florence, 32, from Richmond Park in London, wanted to train as a nurse to serve her community's healthcare needs. Despite strong demand for nursing training and clear staffing shortages across London hospitals, she found her path blocked by artificial constraints on training places. Health Education England's budget was deliberately limited by HM Treasury, treating essential workforce development as a cost to be minimised rather than an investment in public health. The training capacity existed, qualified applicants were ready, but Westminster chose to cap funding as though the government that issues the pound could run out of pounds.
