Am 5. Oktober 1972 gründete Jean-Marie Le Pen den Front National. Jahrzehntelang prägte Le Pen die Partei als Vorsitzender - bis seine Tochter dem FN einen Kurs der "Normalisierung" verordnet hat. Aus der später in Rassemblement National (RN) umbenannten Partei wurde Jean-Marie Le Pen ausgeschlossen. Heute ist der RN laut Umfragen die politische Kraft, die mit großem Abstand die meisten Wähler in Frankreich hinter sich versammelt.
