Steve Bug returns to his own Poker Flat with Can U?, a two-track release that finds him loosening the frame and following ideas as they emerge in the studio. The title track began with a little more experimentation, built around an old-school drum loop and a forgotten sample that gave the piece its initial direction. From there it develops with the economy and control that have long defined Bug’s productions, letting small shifts in rhythm, texture and repetition do the work. There is a raw edge to the groove while the arrangement remains precise and patient, drawing its character from the contrast between the familiar pull of the loop and the stranger details gathered around it. Follow The Signs came together in a more instinctive way. Steve let the session run and the track came to life through that open process. Its clipped motifs, lean construction and direct club momentum recall the spirit of his Traffic Signs releases while carrying the sound firmly into the present.
