He led a team of medical professionals who successfully separated twins who were conjoined at the back of their heads. The same hands that had performed a medical miracle had also been used to commit violent acts. Dr. Carson said in his autobiography, "Gifted Hands" that he had stabbed one of his classmates when he was a teen. By the grace of God, the blade hit a metal belt buckle and did no harm. However, after this incident, Dr. Carson reflected on how his life could have gone in another direction if his classmate had been hurt or injured. After deep reflection, he began to read the book of Proverbs in the Bible which helped him learn how to manage negative emotions.
