On For Your Information this week, my guest is Ashley McHenry, Communications Coordinator with the Montgomery County Foodbank (MCF) located in Conroe, who told listeners how the organization receives and dispenses millions of pounds of food and necessaries to the tens-of-thousands of people in need there. She gave statics on the number of people in need in the county, and said there are 52 independent smaller foodbanks in the county that get items from MCF and they in turn disburse it to those in need. McHenry explained the majority of the food and items are bought by MCF, using cash donations, and by working with partners such as HEB, Kroger, produce outlets, even the FDA. MCF has storage, according to McHenry, of more than a million pounds of nonperishables and a refrigeration/freezer area of another million pounds of perishables. She also spoke of food drives coming up for the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.
