Forged in Injustice: The Stolen Science of Black Metallurgists

The foundation of American industrial and financial power was built upon the advanced metallurgical expertise of enslaved African master refiners, who mastered the complex chemistry of iron smelting long before their techniques were scaled up during the Industrial Revolution. This intellectual property was systematically stolen through a patent system that allowed white industrialists to claim exclusive credit for innovations perfected by Black artisans, converting their forced labor into vast, inheritable wealth. Current efforts using forensic technology are identifying these forgotten innovators and their descendants to pursue legal restitution and ensure that public history accurately reflects the multi-racial origins of the nation's economic might.
