Forgotten Angkor: LiDAR Reveals Hidden Technology

Angkor Wat is Cambodia’s most famous temple, but it’s just one piece of a massive ancient city and a sprawling empire that once covered parts of Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. For centuries, jungles, settlements, and war hid the true scale of this civilization—until LiDAR surveys in 2012 and 2015 mapped 2,100 km², revealing an engineered landscape unlike anything from the pre-industrial world. In this episode, we’ll discuss: the 1,000 km network of elevated roads, colossal dams and canals, massive reservoirs like the 8km-long Western Baray, and the mysterious mound fields and unexplainable mile-long spiral embankments –scattered across Cambodia and with no known purpose. We’ll also explore some of the lesser-known temple complexes far from Angkor Wat, each with their own puzzles.
