Form – Matter- Fabrication – Performance: From Control to Uncertainty and Back

from CDFAM Computational Design Symposium · host Duann Scott

Recorded at CDFAM Computational Design Symposium, NYC 2024Presentation AbstractThe talk is about the on-going research efforts at ForMat (Form and Matter) Lab at Penn State University, directed by Benay Gürsoy. Benay and her team explore the relationship between matter and form, fabrication and performance mediated through the use of digital technologies. Current research in the lab includes work on adaptive robotic fabrication, and the design and sustainable production of mycelium-based building parts and structures.Benay Gürsoy is an Assistant Professor of Architecture and the founder and director of ForMat (Form and Matter) Lab at Penn State. Her research and teaching focus is on computational making, digital fabrication, biofabrication, and shape studies. Benay completed her PhD studies in Architectural Design Computing Program at Istanbul Technical University in 2016 and was awarded the Best Ph.D. Dissertation Award by The Graduate School of Science, Engineering, and Technology. She has published and presented her research internationally and received awards, including the 2010 Young CAADRIA Award, and 2015 CAAD Futures Best Paper Award, 2021 and 2022 AIA UpJohn Research Initiatives and 2022 SOM Foundation Research Prize.CDFAM Computational Design Symposium series brings together leading experts in computational design from industry, academia and software development for two days of knowledge sharing and networking. Managing Next Generation Energy Systems Cambridge University Background Stakeholders working with energy systems have to make complex decisions formulated from risk-based assessments about the future. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation. Have you ever doubted whether you have what it takes to share such a big, bold idea? Over our lives, we're told no so many times that many of us start to believe that we need permission to dream big and to believe our big idea is even possible or worth pursuing. We think it's time that changed. We decided to look at everything that makes us feel so amazing when we play. This includes things like safety, support, and fun. We crafted all of these elements to design an event called the Play Day Summit. On this podcast, Ideas in Play, we take the same ideas used at our event and discuss it tin the context of different careers. The goals is that we help people realize how to escape the trap of playing small in our lives and careers.
