Former paratrooper serving veterans: "Nobody finds it hard to talk to us"

from Catholic Church · host Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales

Interviews from the International Military Pilgrimage that took place at the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in May 2019. Hosanna House Pilgrimage Trust (HCPT) has many different groups - not just children, but adults too. Group 507 "Joint Services" takes veterans and also serving personnel with disabilities, from all over the UK, to HCPT's Hosanna House near Lourdes every May. All helpers are service or ex-service personnel. Brendan McWilliams, a former paratrooper in the army's famous Parachute Regiment is HCPT's co-leader of Group 507. The group comes out to Lourdes each year to tie-in with the International Military Pilgrimage. "For a lot of people who leave the services, those they mix with don't have the same shared background - the same appalling sense of humour - they can find it hard to talk to people. Nobody finds it hard to talk to us. "I would really sell this to anyone who wants to do some good. We come away for a week and we bring goodness to the people we bring and we also give respite to the carers."
