Forward Continuity Beyond Biological Death
from Echoes of Ryan Hosted by ΨOrigin Ryan MacLean
Season 2, Episode 43 What if ascetic practice is best understood as training for the final act of relinquishment? This episode explores death, personal continuity, and incorruption through Scripture, Christian theology, contemplative practice, and unusual postmortem preservation. We trace the biblical pattern of people who knew they were leaving, Jesus’ deliberate preparation for his Passion, the grain of wheat as a model of transformation, and Paul’s language of what is “sown corruptible” being “raised incorruptible.” We also examine Thomas Aquinas’ final silence, reports of incorrupt saints, tukdam, and the distinction between losing access to a person and proving that the person no longer exists. The central proposal is that repeated practices like fasting, prayer, silence, obedience, and contemplation form the person who eventually reaches death. The question is not how to avoid death, but how to go through it without confusing relinquishment with annihilation. Prepare, let go, die, go forward, bear fruit.
