Almost 40 percent of American adults and nearly 20 percent of adolescents are obese. Lawrence J. Cheskin, M.D., F.A.C.P., Associate Professor of Health, Behavior & Society, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine led a study that examined the financial costs of being overweight at various stages of life. He said lost productivity on the job accounted for at least 50% of the expense of being overweight, even more than direct medical expenditures.
