Franchise Growth vs Reality

from Franchise Reality Check™ Podcast Hosted by Genevieve McDaniel and Dan Collins

*Update: As of October 9, 2026 and October 10, 2026, Picklr, Inc. and Picklr Clubs, Inc. have both filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy petitions. 130 franchise agreements ended. Five franchisee companies filed Chapter 11. Two very different franchise brands, and some important lessons for anyone considering investing in a franchise. This week on Franchisee 1st Reality Check, Genevieve McDaniel, founder of Franchise Reality Check™, and Dan Collins, CFE, of Franchisee 1st Advisors, dig into the numbers behind recent headlines involving Jamba and The Picklr. Jamba: What Really Happened to 130 Franchise Agreements? Jamba's 2026 Franchise Disclosure Document reports 116 terminations, 13 non-renewals, and one franchise that ceased operations for another reason over the previous three years. It also reports 126 transfers. But does that mean 130 stores failed? Not necessarily. Genevieve and Dan discuss what franchise terminations actually mean, why Jamba included a warning about franchise turnover in its FDD, and how the company's restructuring efforts complicate the story. They also explain why Item 20 is one of the most important sections of an FDD and why prospective buyers should contact former franchisees, not just successful ones. The Picklr: Can a Popular Sport Support a Multimillion-Dollar Franchise Investment? Five entities operating The Picklr franchise locations filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy on September 24, 2026. These were franchisee filings, not a bankruptcy filing by the franchisor. Genevieve examines The Picklr's 2026 FDD, including an estimated initial investment of approximately $1.25 million to $2.08 million and financial performance data from just 12 qualifying mature locations. Those locations reported average annual sales of approximately $963,000 and average EBITDA of 10.9%. Dan shares a troubling experience with a prospective pickleball franchisee facing a $750,000 annual lease and a multimillion-dollar investment, illustrating how enthusiasm for a concept can overshadow financial reality. The conversation also gets personal as Genevieve explains why she sold her Domino's franchises to spend more time raising her children, challenging the assumption that franchise ownership automatically creates more freedom. The question isn't whether Jamba or pickleball is popular. It's whether the investment makes financial sense. If you're considering buying a franchise, this episode offers a practical look at FDD Items 7, 19, and 20, franchise turnover, development agreements, operating costs, and the importance of evaluating the numbers before signing.
