Francisco Boix, a Spanish Republican prisoner at the Mauthausen concentration camp, risked his life to preserve photographic evidence of Nazi crimes during the Holocaust.Francisco Boix, a young Spanish Republican and former soldier in the Spanish Civil War, became during the Second World War one of the most important photographic witnesses to Nazi crimes during the Holocaust. Born in Barcelona in 1920, he fled to France after the fall of the Spanish Republic. When Nazi Germany invaded France, Boix was captured and deported in 1941 to the Mauthausen concentration camp, where over 7,000 Spanish Republicans were imprisoned. Assigned to work in the camp’s photography lab operated by the SS, Boix had access to thousands of photographs documenting everyday life, forced labor, executions, and the presence of high-ranking Nazi officials at the camp. Recognizing the historical value of this material, Boix and other prisoners began secretly copying and hiding negatives, often at great personal risk. With the help of an Austrian civilian named Anna Pointner, they managed to hide the photos outside the camp until liberation. After the war, Francisco Boix played a crucial role in the Nuremberg Trials and later the Dachau Trials. His photographic evidence proved invaluable in exposing the atrocities committed in Mauthausen and the personal involvement of Nazi leaders. His testimony directly contributed to the conviction of figures such as Ernst Kaltenbrunner, one of the highest-ranking SS officers prosecuted. Despite his heroic efforts, Boix’s health never recovered from his years in the camp. He died in 1951 in Paris at just 30 years old.
