Ačkoliv počet nelegálních přechodů hranice mezi Mexikem a USA téměř dvacet let klesal, v posledních dvou letech se tento trend obrátil. Nejpočetnější skupinu migrantů však již netvoří Mexičané, ale lidé z Hondurasu, Guatemaly a Salvadoru, kteří prchají před organizovaným zločinem, násilím a chudobou. Azylový systém je přetížený, detenční centra přeplněná a podmínky v nich nelidské. Odborníci situaci označují za humanitární krizi. Trumpova administrativa však stále zpřísňuje podmínky pro přistěhovalce i žadatele o azyl a chce pokračovat ve výstavbě hraniční zdi. Americký spisovatel Francisco Cantú, který působil v řadách pohraniční stráže, upozorňuje, že strategie odstrašování a militarizace hranice nevedou k menšímu počtu pokusů o nelegální přechod, ale k většímu počtu úmrtí v poušti. Řešení situace nehledá jen v reformě migrační politiky, ale především v proměně jazyka, kterým o migrantech mluvíme.
