Fraud Rockets Higher in Mobile-First Latin America

Digital banking fraud is surging across Latin America, with social engineering scams jumping 155% in 2025 and account takeover attempts quadrupling in Mexico, according to a new report from BioCatch. The mobile-first nature of the region's economy has made it particularly vulnerable, as attackers chain together techniques from voice scams to device takeover to fraudulent transfers, often moving money before banks can react. While some countries like Argentina have seen success with real-time fraud intelligence-sharing networks, the overall threat landscape remains severe, particularly on Android devices where remote-access tools are widely available.
