Freakin' Leakin': Dr. Mistry On Axonics and Other Life-Changing Treatments for Urinary Incontinence

Today, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee are excited to discuss a newer treatment option, the Axonics neuromodulator, which uses electrical stimulation to send signals that encourage your bladder nerves to behave themselves. We carefully screen the patients for whom we recommend the initial trial of this device, so the majority go on to get the device fully implanted along with a small battery that is MRI-safe (unlike many older neuromodulating devices). Another option is the injection of Botox into the bladder, which helps calm spasms and misbehaving nerves. These procedures are usually covered by insurance when the patient tried prescription medications but couldn't tolerate their side effects (which often include dry mouth and constipation or diarrhea and high blood pressure, depending on the medicine).
