“Free”

from "Prayer Changes Everything" Devotion for Today · host Y.E.S. Jesus Youth Encountering Savior Jesus

Sept. 21,2026 Daily Devotional: “Free” Matthew 10:8 "Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give." When Jesus sent out His twelve disciples, He gave them an extraordinary assignment paired with radical authority. They were sent into hurting communities to bring physical healing, spiritual freedom, and life where there was brokenness. Yet the heart of Jesus’ commission isn't just about the miracles themselves—it is found in the final phrase: "Freely you have received; freely give." Notice thesequence. Before the disciples could give anything away, they had to recognize what they had already been given. They didn't earn their spiritual authority, buy their salvation, or work their way into grace. Everything they possessed—forgiveness, peace, power, and the love of God—was a gift freely poured out on them. It is easy to let our daily spiritual walk become transactional. We fall into the trap of measuring what we give against what we feel we get in return. We guard our time, our energy, ourforgiveness, and our resources, giving only when it feels safe or convenient. But grace was never meant to be stored in a reservoir; it was meant to flow like a river. When you realize how endlessly rich you are in the grace of Christ, holding back becomes unnatural. The patience you show others is simply the patience God extends to you every morning. The generosity you offer with your finances or time is a natural overflow of the abundance you’ve inherited in God's kingdom. You don't serve out of scarcity or obligation—you give freely because you have received limitlessly. Matthew 10:8 is part of Jesus’ commissioning of His twelve apostles as He sends them out to preach, heal, and proclaim the kingdom of heaven. A stewardship mindset lies on what God bestows on believers is not meant to be hoarded or commercialized, but passed on as an act of grace and stewardship to others. Audit your inventory and identify the overflow. Take a moment to name three specific spiritual or physical blessings God has freely given you recently (like… peace during a storm, financial provision, a second chance). Ask yourself, who in my life needs what God has given me? Is there someone who needs your patience, a word of encouragement, or a tangible act of kindness today? Give without condition and perform one act of service or generosity today with zero expectation of recognition, repayment, or reciprocity.
