Free Speech v. Hate Speech?

from NoelleDunphyFiles/EpsteinFiles Podcast · host NoelleDunphyFiles/EpsteinFiles

The time is now to define free speech versus hate speech. Free speech protects us from unfair censorship, but bullying, bigotry, calls for violence, harassment and threats are not free speech—or are they? What exactly separates Hate Speech from Free Speech? Is Hate speech only words that spur violence? Now the nation is struggling to heal from the unfair acts of a gunman, after the loss of another young person shot and killed, Charlie Kirk. Charlie was a strong pro-Trump advocate whose debate style and rhetoric led to the conversion of many youth on colleges campuses across America. Charlie spread the message of family values, Republican views and Christianity. His charisma, public speaking talent and good looks attracted a following of millions of young Republicans, but whether or not you agreed with Charlie’s views, please remember that hate speech and violence are never the answer. That is my heartfelt belief, and my subscribers have the right to disagree with me if they have research or reasons to support their argument.I ask Democrats: Did Malcom X get more results and advance human rights more than Martin Luther King? Did Gandhi get more results with peaceful protest than if he were violent? It would be tough in 2025 to not support the advancement of all human rights, but the question is how to most effectively and efficiently achieve that advancement. As a female with concerned for abuse victims, I seek progress in the government and many times feel at a loss. Do I use free speech to communicate my concerns? Sometimes I do, but never hate speech. I was raised to condemn violence in all shapes and forms, including the violence behind hate speech. I do not participate in hate speech, and if I ever make a statement that could be misconstrued that way, please correct me. None of us are perfect, but we can strive to love, not hate.I believe in the power of forgiveness versus vengeance. Struck by the words from France, from a man who lost his child and wife in the terrorist attack in Paris. In essence, he said the terrorists took his child and his wife, but they could not lead him to destroy himself with hate. He chose to forgive. After 9-11, widows and children left fatherless or motherless faced a choice: do you forgive the killers who stole the life of your husband, your dad, your wife or your mother? It is not easy to forgive. Yet it is essential in order to heal. Both Republicans and Democrats have been killed by senseless violence.Faith can help you heal. However, the caution with religion is the danger to prophetize and preach, to treat others as the enemy if they don’t agree with your God. If they follow what you say is the “wrong” faith, do you condemn them? Do you try to change them if it is unsolicited and unwelcome preaching? Can we accept others as they are? Can we simply live and let live? Can we all live in peace?I will leave it to the lawyers and experts who I interviewed to give the exact definitions of free speech and hate speech, and examples of each.I never pretend to be an expert in a matter of which I am not licensed. I am trained as a business executive and writer. While I have worked with enough lawyers in my life to know a significant amount about the law, I do not yet fully understand how injustice is in America continues and the court does so little about it.Why not eliminate all the loopholes criminals use to get away with atrocious acts of abuse and murder?
