🌀 Free the Tailbone, Find the Core: A Simple Shift for Powerful Core Engagement

from Mindfulness, Movement, and Exercise · host Jenn Pilotti

Welcome back to Body, Mind, Movement—I’m Jen, and this week’s tutorial is a deceptively simple core exploration that invites you to refine how you organize your spine, weight, and attention in a quadruped position.🌟 What You’ll PracticeThis session starts on all fours, with toes flexed under. From here, the first focus is the tailbone—is it truly free to move? Many of us unknowingly "lock" the tailbone through habitual tension or overcorrection. You’ll begin by exploring subtle tailbone movement, noticing if it feels dumped (collapsed into the low back), over-tucked (posterior tilt), or actually available to shift with ease. When you find that middle ground—that feeling of availability—you’ve accessed a key part of dynamic spinal support.🚀 The Core ActivationWith the tailbone free, you'll float the knees just off the ground. This small lift shifts everything—suddenly your system needs to organize and respond. From here, try lifting the heels of the palms, first right, then left. If you can, balance on your fingertips. What do you notice?Does your weight rock side-to-side?Do your feet ground more to help? Can you balance the shifting tension through feet, pelvis, and upper body? This isn’t just about strength—it’s about clarity in how your body distributes effort and maintains access to movement.🧠 Neck Awareness: The Finishing TouchFinally, bring attention to your neck and eyes. If your head is hanging and eyes are glued to the floor, try this:Imagine the front of your throat growing long. This subtle cue draws your head into more neutral alignment, relieving pressure on the neck and inviting an integrated sense of presence from head to tail.🎥 Watch, Try, ReflectThis movement isn’t flashy, but it’s potent. When you learn to organize rather than brace, the core becomes a responsive, living structure—not a rigid shield.Give it a try and let me know how it feels.
