Freedom Art -  Interview with Nathan Bowen, Street Artist

Are you inspired?  Steven is at Woodbury House with Nathan Bowen, Guerrilla Street Artist. His style is unique, fast, dynamic and unpredictable with his signature characters ‘ the demons’ invading building sites and hoardings all over London.  Nathan paints internationally and his ideas are fresh and edgy continually reminding people that there is no limit to your imagination it’s all about being creative and free.  In this episode, they discuss fine art, painting abroad, how Nathan developed his freedom art and how being featured on The Apprentice changed his life.     KEY TAKEAWAYS  Whether you are a salesperson, athlete, artist or entrepreneur having a vision is key.  My freedom art is sketchy scribbly loose lines, I gave up trying to be perfect.  I developed this style during my final year studying fine art at St Martin’s in London  I like my work to appeal to and be accessible to everyone, I want my work to be in every household.  I originally started with graffiti and got arrested which made me realise I wanted to stop sneaking around with my hood up so I applied and went to St Martins to do fine art.  My artwork being featured as a part of the Apprentice series changed my life. After the program, I was able to sell my art and make a living from it  It all came down to timing - the artwork featured on the program was the bearskin hat character and people were feeling very patriotic at the time so after the program, I was approached for commissions and my artwork started selling.  I do the characters such as the builders and the bearskin hat soldier to remind people that these people are an important part of London.  The demon characters were originally  based on the idea of a comic strip.  I was working on building sites at the time which is why the first demon character I created was a builder with a Hi-Viz jacket and hard hat.  The demon characters are humans but on a different  level  You have to do things because you love doing them,  The challenges and setbacks have to be absorbed and overcome along the way.
