After an eventful evening at the Coles', Emma is ready to take some time to slow down and reflect on the experience. Her afternoon outing into Highbury with Harriet is the perfect opportunity. While Harriet is buying ribbons, Emma observes the comings and goings around town, till she is interrupted by the arrival of Mrs. Weston and Frank. They are headed to the Bateses' to hear Jane Fairfax's new pianoforte, and when Miss Bates hears that Emma and Harriet are nearby, the two young women have no choice but to join them.
