Have you ever tried to argue with a child? You try to help them understand that what they did was wrong and why they shouldn’t do it again. The child very confidently explains several reasons why in their mind it was fine, and they don’t see why they should stop. You quickly realize that this is a losing battle, and in some cases, you may resort to pulling rank because there is just no other way.
