Friday the 13th (2009)

from Horror Movie Night Hosted by Geekscape

A Friday the 13th during Franchise February? You know we had to go back 17 years to the day for a rewatch of FRIDAY THE 13TH (2009). It’s not a particularly good movie, but as Matt points out, it might be the best F13 sequel we got post-JASON LIVES, but that’s a pretty low bar to begin with. Who cares, Jason the Survivalist is out there! Join our Patreon Buy Some Merch Join our Facebook Group Follow us on Instagram Check our Letterboxd

If I remember correctly and we can all tell our version to the story, we'll wait for the dossier to drop 20 years from now. But what I think happened was there was some suggestions about franchises and this was one of them. I don't even know there was a Friday 13th in February until we got to this point. Oh, then it definitely was me because it's Friday the 13th in February.

And this is obviously franchise February. And this is the hottest one. Oh, this is the one with the most boobs that came out in 2009. Man, I'll get this story out of the way.

And I think I told it trachearly in the past on the show. But I saw this opening weekend. I think I may have actually seen it on Friday the 13th 2009, or it would have been Thursday the 12th because they also put movies out on Thursday. But I want to say that it was actually Friday the 13th 2009, the official opening day.

And the story is actually that that was the last date, but not really a date. But it was the last time I went out to the movies with someone who was not now my wife. I went with this girl. Romantic.

It was Emily, but it wasn't a date. So I was on... It wasn't romantic. This is such a weird...

I don't even know how this happened. So I believe this girl was Emily. And she was engaged, but she was on... Or she had a long distance boyfriend.

It was super serious even for years. I can't quite remember the details. But she was on plenty of fish. And for the young, and plenty of fish is a, I believe, now defunct.

I think so. I don't remember. I don't know what's happening. Is that one of the ones for the people who like to...

No, I guess you're on it. So it's not people who like to fish. Nevermind. No, it was like...

No, it was clearly a play on the plenty of fish in the sea. Oh, yeah. But yeah, I... Sweet child.

Listen, I did a lot of my time on daydreaming on the plenty of fish. Very unsuccessfully. And I would actually argue the plenty of fish. This is one of the places that I had the absolute worst success.

Serious. I met a lot of nice women. I mean, I met two nice women in my time on and off of plenty of fish. And then I had maybe three bad dates.

But I also... Five people... Let's count one of those as this woman from this story here. So I dated one girl.

I went on this pseudo date with one girl. And then I think I went out for coffee with two, maybe three other ones. And it wasn't great. So I mean, like...

I don't know what that means as far as how good or bad that is, except because I am a hopeless nerd. So anyway... Well, listen, if we're talking about success on date starting into a relationship, then I was batting zero. I just been getting anyone to meet me, period.

I think I was talking about the hardest on plenty of fish. Right. It also can be geographical issues. But in any case, sometimes it's the bait.

Sometimes it's the cast. It's always the bait. In my case, it was always the bait. All right.

So this woman, I was like, I'm going to go see the new Friday of the 13th. Like, I don't know if you want to come. So she had this long distance weapon. She was like very clear on her profile.

I was like, I'm just looking for friends. And I was like, that's fine. She was like an alt girl. So we had music in common.

I was like, I'm cool with friends too. So I'm like, I'm going to go see Friday of the 13th. You want to come? And she was like, sure.

That was a mistake. There are so many boobies in this movie. But there were more in the killer cut than the actual cut because actually, test-logging is where there's too much sex and violence in the original. The 106 minute original cut got knocked down by 11 minutes, which is fucking nuts.

They took 11 minutes of sex and violence out for the theatrical version. And it was still a lot. So it was a relatively uncomfortable movie-watching experience. And then I don't think I really talked.

I think we chatted on G-chat or plenty of fish a couple more times. And then it wasn't a date, but it was also still a bad decision to take a young woman to go see this movie in theaters. But I would argue that unless this woman had never seen a Friday of the 13th movie in her life. I mean, I don't think that she was like, oh, this guy's sending me to a movie with a lot of boobs in it.

That's kind of what the franchise is known for. Yeah, I agree. She was a sweet girl, sweet woman. But still, some mistakes were made.

Funny thing is that literally six weeks later, Megan and I start seeing each other. The length of time that Whitney is stuck in Jason's horrible basement is the right time. Six weeks no issues with makeup. She looks gorgeous.

She is doing just fine. What is he feeding her? I think he's feeding her human flesh because he's a survivor. He's murdering these people, bringing their bodies back.

I think this is a cannibal whoopsie. It might be another Scott Roger classic. Yeah, it's just that I didn't have the opportunity to do it. The subtext of Friday of the 13th remake is that there's he's eating it off.

Did we all watch the killer cut, by the way? Yeah, because I watched the DVD that I had, which I think it only was released in the killer cut. It does the extra 11 minutes is a lot, dude. It's so much.

Listen, I've said this before. And like, y'all know, I love horror movies. I love slasher movies. I love the screen franchise.

But the screen franchise is the most guilty in this sense. No slasher movie needs to break the 90 minute mark ever. That's like a punk song that's five minutes long, you know? It's like, what are we doing?

So for this week to be an hour and 45 minutes, you better have earned every one of those 15 extra minutes. And I'm going to say, I think the audience was right. I think the audience was right. I didn't do it exactly what needed to go.

We all watched. We all watched this in 2009, ish. Right. We all saw the game.

I saw it probably the exact same time frame that Scott sang. Either saw it Friday night or Thursday night or Friday night. Like, yeah, I did that. The theater run too.

I don't think I saw it. I did too. And honestly, I remember, I remember there being, and there still is a lot of love for this one. And I had a lot of love for it too.

I really thought it was pants. Pretty universal. I was going to say, I know a lot of people who hate this one. I think that they're wrong.

I guess I just thought there was a lot of people who liked Derek Mears as Jason. And I think that there was a lot of like, I don't know. I remember people being like, this is a really solid remake of the show. I guess maybe they're comparing it to worse things at that time.

You know, or like the night. Oh, yeah. Well, that's the thing. This was the best, in my opinion, this was one of the best remakes that we got of a horror film in this time.

In that time period of the very late 2000s, early 2010s, where we were getting like two or three horror movie remakes every year. Yeah. This was one of the best ones. But I think it was, because I saw this with a bunch of like Friday the 13th diehards.

And this was definitely before I became a big Friday 13th fan. I had seen all the movies. I had liked some of the movies, but at that time, obviously Freddie is still my number one. Freddie was my number one.

I would put the screen movies over Friday the 13th. I probably was putting the Halloween and Hellraiser movies over Friday the 13th. I don't know if I agree with that stance because there are some really boring and bad Hellraiser and Halloween movies. We know that now.

Yeah. Where I know that like the Friday 13th movies, even the worst one is a pretty easy to watch 90 minute ride of kills. So I walked away and I was like, this is great. It's not actually a remake.

Like so many of the other remakes were like, we're going back to the basics. Like Halloween, we're retelling Michael Myers child's story and we're going to retell everything that happened. Texas Chainsaw Massacre. We're going to follow all the beats.

Like right. Nightmare on this one was like, hey, in the first three minutes of opening credits, we're just going to recap like three of the first three movies. Yeah. And then where this picks up, you've got hockey mask Jason Boor.

He's already an established character. So it kind of was like, it was an attempt to reboot the franchise that got fucked up by a bunch of legalese afterwards. But like it was an attempt to reboot the franchise, but reboot it where it's like, this is technically just like Friday the 13th part 12. Like it just operates as another sequel in the franchise, which I thought was great.

I had a lot of friends who were diehards that thought that this was the absolute worst Friday the 13th movie that they'd ever seen. And I don't even think it's the worst Friday the 13th movie. That's a double digit sequel. Like I would put this I would put this above Jason goes to hell.

I would put this over Jason X. I would put this over Freddy versus Jason. I would argue that this is probably the best Friday the 13th movie since Jason lives because I'm not a huge fan of seven. I love bro.

You know, you are changing my thoughts on this because so when I watched it, I definitely was not as well versed in the sequels. And I was like, this is kind of boring. You know, I wanted to see it in actual sequel and not like a half rehash half sequel kind of thing. But when you put it like that where you're like, it's literally better than everything that came after Jason lives, which is a wild take.

Right? Like that is so that's such a hot take. But I can't argue it because like the logic is really sound. I think it's a logical take.

I think that like there's I mean you're dealing. When you're dealing with Friday at 13 fans, you're dealing with illogical people. Because emotionally because emotionally no because listen, and I'm going to say something's going to bring them all in too. Like emotionally they love Kane Hodder, but refused to acknowledge that Kane Hodder exclusively was in bed Friday the 13th sequels.

Yeah. Yeah. He's like kind of the name and face outside of the mask. Yeah.

I think it's just marketing like I have no big. Because I argue the best Kane Hodder Friday the 30th movie is Jason takes Manhattan, which is a low fucking alarm. Well, there's a lot of things. Because it's like everyone hates Manhattan.

I love I'm like I'm like a little bit harder ones. I think people say are good Kane Hodder. I think they I think they love Jason X and they I think they love the new blood, which I just I don't know if Jason versus Carrie never worked for me. I mean you bled as a soul.

I agree that it is Jason versus Carrie. But like when I think of King Hodder, I think of Jason goes to Manhattan. Jason goes to Manhattan. Jason goes to Manhattan.

I think it's the coolest he ever looked. And then he goes to Staten Island and then he goes to Bronx and then he goes to the whole trip. Well, he's going to New York. He's going to New York.

Yeah. Well, the other thing I loved about this movie and I'm very curious about Kyle here, but it's kind of establishes that Jason is very protective of his Doritos and doesn't want. Anyone coming here is Dorito far. Listen, that's the thing.

How do you think survivalists make money? You know, it is it start. Yeah, it when you have the precipice be these teenagers, I'm not teenagers. These young adults, the twenty five year olds.

Yeah, right. Like I do appreciate that they're not like a straight out of high school, but they're young ins and they're dumb ins and they're going to go get a crop of weed from from they don't even fucking know where they have a G.P.A. They have a garment. They have a geocaching.

But like drugs. I know, I thought it was going to be cute and it actually ended up being weed, but they're going to go get this weed. And when you think about it, and they step upon a place near Camp Crystal Lake, Jason gets them. And that's like the opening of the movie, right?

I love that. I thought two minutes. Splash them out into like the 23 minute mark. I remember seeing all that sick, you know.

They were so much build up of this group of characters, which you don't really like. There's nobody in there that I really gave a shit about. So I was starting to get a little antsy. I was like, Jesus.

Okay. I mean, I saw this movie when it came out. I forgot that that was like how it started, right? Yeah.

And then yeah, there's weed growing near Camp Crystal Lake, but that means that please probably been killing off anybody who goes near that weed. So it's not just about like, you can't have sex. You can't have drugs. He's baiting people now because like people need to come to this part of the people need to come to this camp so that he can feed and eat humans.

It's a cow mousie. I don't know how's the feed. His own. How do you think he got so big and strong?

Eating people. Well, so we'll give a quick little rundown. I'll give a quick little rundown of what happens in this movie beyond what we already did. So like the first scene is 1980.

So Friday 13th 1980, Alice B. Head's Mrs. Woorhees, young Jason sees that and we see this locket that is kind of like a through line in this movie. They, we fast forward to that first group of people who are looking for weed and they all get murdered.

And there are some, there are some pretty fun quips in this movie just in general. And my favorite one from that first group of people that get murdered is definitely the one girl like slaps a mosquito off of her ass. And her boyfriend is like, Hey, you want to slap that ass one more time for daddy? She's like, Oh, you like that?

I'm like, Oh, no, thank you. Yeah. And then the girl. Yeah, later on the nerdy guy who's got the GPS is trying to explain GPS to the guy, the horny guy that we're just talking about.

And, and the guy's like, just shut up, man. And he's like, he tells us to like, he doesn't care about story because we get the campfire story of Jason killing people around campus. So like, and he's like, you know, if I was stuck out here, I would eat, I'd eat people. I'd start with you.

I'd eat your leg and the nerdy guys like, wow, you eat me. I could teach you how to fish and he goes, I only fish. And his girlfriend quick on the upkeep goes now, which told me and I'm just no one talks like this. No, no, it was.

No, it was nobody talks like that, which I did feel like in like an, I mean, if we're going to give it some credit, it did feel like a nod to like, oh, these are how the people were going to talk in any of the previous Friday 13 movies. Like this is like such a nod to trying to dialogue in the 80s. I don't think I don't think that is what happens. But I do if you can approach it in that way.

It is it is fun. Also, I do have to say there's one point where the dorky guy, so we find out that they're growing because the dorky guy's peeing in the woods. And I was watching with Carly and she looks over at me and goes, no one ever enjoys a pee more than a man in the woods in a mood. Like nobody has ever loved taking a piss more.

I can attest to the fact I have never sounded like I'm coming when I'm peeing. I'm very, I don't, I can't imagine. I don't think I have either. Now there have been instances where maybe I don't remember peeing and there's been a groan that's come out.

Not like that. Yeah, not not a full fledged climax. But the best part about that scene before he takes a piss onto the weed that he's excited to find. So loud.

Yeah, I feel so connected to this guy because he he's he's got his like his his his iPod with him because it's 2009 and he's got his headphones and he's just he's got a sister Christian blaring and he gets the chorus and he puts us out because the what's your prize? That's that's beyond most of our ranges. And so he does what everybody does. He sings and in his full voice and so that part and then he goes into his head voice and just kind of mumbles a bit because then you're out in the middle of nowhere and no one can hear you.

So same bro. So yeah, he gets killed. The horny girl and her boyfriend are there banging and there's so much boob and then they get killed and then it says six weeks later and you come across another group of 25 year old 19 year olds who are arriving at this guy Trent's cabin for the weekend right on Crystal Lake. And we are in the people that their names pretty much don't really matter but Trent has a very punchable face and it's his cabin.

So I had to remember his name. Yeah, sure. They they the name to face equation was 100 correct like that is Trent that is a Trent if I've ever seen a fucking tree. I don't know why.

Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, I could be a Jake. I feel like a chat is appropriate but almost a chat was overused. You do have nine chats maybe appropriate but right now it feels a little but Trent sticks and it's it remains.

It's a great punchable name and face. I knew that it took him a while to get my sorry. I was like just ready for it the whole time because he just sucks. Good actor absolute shitty character.

But we are introduced to them and we have then oh I forgot to mention that Whitney is the sole survivor of the six week ago massacre and gets carried off by Jason. Her brother Clay is looking for her and he's told by the sheriff not to bother. He is putting up looking at missing signs they printed off and transit it to him in the gas station. Trans girlfriend Jenna played by.

Well, it's not Amber Tamlin not Amber Tamlin. Yes. Exactly like Amber Tamlin. Well, I well it's just so funny because you're a Pat like he I know from Supernatural which is a seed up right now.

I know her from the flash which is also CW show CW versus strong in in oh nine man I was I think I think it's more like 2012 and I got really good. You know, this is the head of the curve except for the exception of the kids. I think that they started as Disney kids or some sort of like, you know, young children like a young adult TV show and then you know got pulled into the CW verse. But in any case, she's like sorry my pseudo boyfriends and ass like don't worry about it and he goes off gets told to like leave it alone by multiple people.

But the best person is the guy running the woodgiver because he he can't hear Jared Pat like he's character Clay walk up behind him and goes, Oh came about this close hit the start button on the whoop ass machine. And I just feel like that could be if I had like a metal core band and it's 2010 having that on the sound clip. Oh yeah. Board would be just that people would be memorable.

Yeah. No, people would go ape shit for that. I do have to say platinum dunes loves houses that look like they're out of hoarders like they love any sort of like how this is dorky but each establishing shot of those neighboring houses up until Trent's house all had the same establishing shot of like wide with a car in the foreground That like that that that trucks left and shows the house and they're all full of shit. All the houses are full of cans and buckets and balls and doesn't fucking matter.

equipment. I don't know why. Yeah. I mean I know the lake is there but that happened in Texas Chainsaw too and there's no lake there that dried up a long time ago.

Yeah. It's also wax also platinum dunes because no that was a castle. No, that was a castle. No, that was a castle.

Our dark castle. Yeah. One of the castles. He's doing the work.

He was putting in the work. So we get this second group of kids quote unquote they show up. They're supposed to be in college because they do say some establishing exposition about like this is so much better than the dorm for the weekend and then they decide to play beer pong as a call flip up beer pong while a couple of them decide to go wakeboarding came our own Wilson is driving the boat and will a fucking Ford will afford. I want to be bad girl.

That's her song right? Is that bad? Yeah. Is that bad?

I don't think it has. Holy shit. That's a good fucking song. You know next time you have something to promote.

Kyle, that's all you. I wasted my opportunity recently with a Y&T song instead of Willa Ford. That was a fun episode to dive into. I won't buy it.

Hey, listen, I don't want to claim Willa Ford. You know Scott, you got something going up. Go. I will make something come up so that I can talk about Willa Ford.

But the funniest thing about Willa Ford being in this is that she had learned how to wakeboard for this movie. That's crazy. And she does it. How did she do it?

With the boobs out. And she said it was quote unquote liberating. More power to her. Good for her.

I want that confidence in my life. I don't have it. I am a mediocre white man, but I don't have a mediocre white man's confidence. A mediocre white man podcaster's confidence.

That's really the quadrecta. Does that matter? You're not going to have a wakeboard in this one out? No.

Don't tell me, baby. Catch me on Crystal, like, Slinging Dong. But anyway, so they get murdered. They're back at the cabin.

Everybody is, oh, oh, that's right. Jenna takes a hike with Clay to go look for his sister. She's wearing strappy sandals. And I'm like, why did you agree to go on a hike without at least some shoes on?

She hates her boyfriend that much, dude. She's just like, get me. And she doesn't care. They're boyfriending fucking Brie when they come back.

Anyway, whatever. We'll get there. You sent me just a quick side note because you guys have sent me spiraling. I have no clue.

I have no clue. Who will afford it? So I'm trying to do all this quick research to see if she counts or not. And do you know that the peak of her popularity of her one song?

Yes. That in 2021, MTV released MTV, a very TRL Christmas. And she was the person to put out the lead single, which was her doing an original song that she wrote called Santa Baby, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme. This comp, I'm like looking at this.

And this is psychotic. There's a song from NSYNC on it. So Christina Aguilera, does Angels We Have Heard On High? TLC, does Slay Ride?

Sugar Ray is on this doing Little Saint Nick, Blink 182 through I Won't Be Home for Christmas at them, which I think is just like any time they get hit up for a song. This is where the simple plan, my Christmas list song originated from. Oh, that's right. Oh, that's so funny.

You're going to be talking about Will Ford on three podcasts, at least now. At least, at least now for you. But this is the part that made me stop and look at it in bafflement because everything I've read to you is Christmas songs. Also Biff Naked covers I saw Mommy Kiss and Santa Claus, whatever.

The head center of it, POD with Rock the Party, the Rock the Party remix. I don't even know what that means or why it's on this Christmas compilation unless they rewrote the whole song about Rock and a Christmas party. I do not know how it made it up to the CD. Oh, man, you guys, I've got so much to, yes, Kyle, you were correct.

Now apparently we're discussing Will Ford on three different podcasts. I work to do, brother. I will be the most knowledgeable Will Ford human on this planet by the time 2026 comes to its logical conclusion. Will Ford is going to be like, bro, you know too much about me.

Yeah. You're going to get served papers. So I'm just sharing facts. We should talk a little bit about this Lake scene though.

So they go on the lake. That is probably one of my favorite kills actually is even though it's quick and abrupt. It is one of my favorite kills of this movie is Will is Kill. That's really interesting.

Is Will it? Who's the one that gets stabbed in the head and then lift it up to show the boob? Yeah. I think it's just it is so perfectly encapsulates what a Friday the 13th kill to me is, right?

It's what it's what it's woman. It's boobs. Death. It's like quick.

It's it just like sort of does everything that I need it to for a Friday 30 movie. Well, I think it also I am not the fan of Jason X that a lot of people are, but there is one scene. I guess there's two scenes that everyone kind of loves in that movie. The first is obviously the face freeze thing, but the other scene that everybody loves and I also do love this scene is when they use like a hollow deck to send Jason back to his time of the 80s.

And it's like these two hologram girls that are both topless and they're like, hello, we're here to sleep with boys, smoke some drugs and drink some beers. And it's like there was this point in the late part of this franchise when they got to the double digits where the franchise became very in the know that they are the sleazy slasher film and like moments like this, it's like, you know what? I like that. That is just like playful.

You know that we are trashy and here's the most stretchy way that we could kill somebody is that for no reason Jason lifts this person up just so she can flash the audience one last time. That is the like full encapsulation of what this franchise has earned itself to be at this point. And it's like, I do applaud those little wings and nods. And I remember that specific moment, the crowd reacted, even the people who didn't like this movie, I think reacted positively to how like wink and nod and funny that was because it's so unnecessary.

It is the most unnecessary thing, but it's a simple guy. And because that first that first section too does a lot of what feels like iconic Jason kills a machete in the head, the sleeping bag, like, you know, a bear trap, which isn't iconic, but I think it is gruesome enough that it kind of works. And then like in the second half or the second group, I just, I don't know, I really like that. Although I will say the tow truck kill was probably my next favorite.

Really the tow truck? Yeah, I like the tow truck. I choose death was my favorite of the movie entire movie. That's true driver through the neck, like under like, like into the larynx was it's doing the car kept it for too long.

I had to ask you know, like, I was like, okay, so real quick question for you guys. Like, is this everybody's second time watching this movie? No, I've watched this a couple times. Yeah, I would say probably fourth or fifth.

Did you watch this? No, so I saw it in theaters. And then this was one that all of my friends bought on DVD when it became available. So like, I think I actively, I actively watched it in the theater.

I actively watched it for the show and I probably actively watched it maybe once, just like after I bought the DVD and then maybe another time while doing a like Friday the 13th rewatch, I normally don't make it this far in the rewatch. I usually tap out around like seven or eight, but this was definitely a like, Hey, we're all hanging out. We don't have any like agenda and we're just throwing a movie on in the background. This was like a pretty regular for at least like 2009, 2010, since it was like a brand new DVD.

It was, I know that this got thrown on a couple times out of you, just like casual hangs. Okay. All right. So the only reason I ask is because it's my first second time watching the killer cut and maybe that's why I enjoyed Chewie's kill so much.

Yeah, it was an early that he's also like, he's a character. Yeah, he really made this. There's one line. There's one line that he goes.

He breaks it. He breaks a chair in the in Trent's house, right? Like Trent's parents house, Trent's freaking out. And she was going to be like, I'm going to fix it.

He's drunk and high as can be. And he goes, they don't call me a wood wizard because I masturbate a lot. Yeah. And then no, like there's this no sort of like, there's no, no selling response from it.

There's nothing. He just says it and then goes and walks of the outs. And right. Almost immediately before that he goes in my next life, he's watching breed do a sexy dance watching drink champagne.

I mean, let's be real. It's probably Prosecco. Prosecco, sure. It goes in my next life.

In my next life, I want to come back as one of the buttons on the ass pocket ever genie shorts, which is such a like, Hey, if you subscribe to our Patreon, you can hear us talk about biodome when they wish they could come back as leotard. Very similar. I was very similar. I watched it.

And I was like, that sounds really similar. That sounds very close to something we just talked about recently. Well, well, so while everybody's getting wasted and like Trent and Bri are going to go have sex, Jenna and Clay are finding Jason's little hideout and they see him like bringing a dead body and they like find this little jangly chain that goes under the ground that is actually for Whitney to hear Jason coming, I guess he lets her know so she can put her clothes on or something. Trapped by Jason for the last six weeks because she reminds him of his dead mother.

Just you know, that's the back. The reason why she got saved from, you know, annihilation previously. So, but she's screaming out of the ground. They can't hear they run back to the cabin.

They're like, there's someone out there is trying to kill people. They interrupt the other dude who was smoking the ball at the bong as he's got to masturbate to the winter catalog, which is great. I love that. And Jenna is totally unfazed that her boyfriend is a boyfriend is fucking Bri.

But we do have the great moment where the most of them like it kind of expected it to happen. Yeah, well, she liked him. No, right. Yeah, but we get this amazing line that everybody probably knows from this, which is the you got perfect nipple placement baby line that Trent says to Bri and she says, I know.

And then they keep having sex. The sooner gets an ax to the back, the sheriff gets a poker through the eye, Trent gets machete in the back and then I forgot that. Oh, and before all that, before all of them, Bri gets the sound like that, then I kill up on the on the antlers. And then we get the surprise Jenna getting sliced from the back to the front because you think the Jenna the Daniel Panabaker, that's her name.

We think that she's going to be the survivor girl, right? And but no, she's not. You get murdered. So the brother and sister escape the underground, the catacombs and they find themselves near the wood shipper.

Now, if you know anything about movies and cinema theory, you never show a wood shipper if you're not going to use it. That's why Alfred Hitchcock used to talk about the suspense. I heard of Jack Hogg's wood shipper. You know, Jared Patilecki Clay is about to get his face eaten by the wood shipper and then Whitney pulls out the magic lock.

It says Jason, you know, stop. Jared Patilecki, sorry, Clay clamps a bear claw, a bear trap on Jason's back, wraps the chain around his neck. They start to choke him and then he is so fucking heavy that he falls down and then the chain gets sucked and pulled into the wood shipper, which essentially is choking him and then Whitney stabs him in the throat or stabs him in the chest with his own machete. He's dead, but he never gets pushed into the wood shipper, which is kind of a, you know, I would like to have seen that, you know, which also makes the last scene of this movie very fucking stupid because instead of just leaving him chained up there because there are dead bodies everywhere.

There's no need to toss Jason in the lake, right? Why would you get rid of the killer of all of your friends that you're going to explain? Do you feel like ceremoniously like Barry Jason? Yeah.

You know, everybody knows. They throw his mask in too and then they drop the lock it and wouldn't you know it? He's not dead. He goes apparently his thought process is I'm at the bottom of the lake.

Let me grab my mask, put it back on, jump up so that I clear about four feet of water, you know, like he's about waist up coming up underneath the dock and smashes through the dock and grabs Whitney because the black. I mean, my suspension of disbelief is off the charts. Yeah. Why do you put the mask back on?

He was a bad head of the first part of this movie. I think here's the, here's the trouble for me. I think with some of these remakes of this era and I like, I'm of this era. Like this is not, this is not a curmudgy thing.

I don't even think this is not a curmudgy thing amongst us really, but I would say that trying to do this sort of like, somewhat serious tone while then making the kills and even like the redemption of Jason at the end. I would say that's funny on paper. That's funny, right? Like the fact that they choose to drag his body, throw it in the lake, maskless, you know, stripped of his Jasonness and then for him to like come back up and redeem himself and then cut the black, that's, that could be funny.

But there's everything that has led all the hour in 40 minutes that led to this last five minutes is kind of like dead serious. It's a weird, it's a weird dichotomy to me. And it's like, you can make Jason and Friday the 13th movies amusing. And I think you did to a point, but then you try to like put this last redemptive bow and I don't know if it's like a studio note where like they're hoping to make another like, I don't know what it is.

Well, there was a sequel plan. Yeah. Okay. This was, so, so here's the thing.

I don't know if we will ever truly get another Friday the 13th franchise film just because of all of the fucking who owns what bullshit and like, for those of you who don't know, the basic argument, as far as I understand it, and I would have, there's probably someone who knows way more than me. So I'm just off the top of the dome trying to paraphrase this, but it is basically that one person is calling claim to the word, to the movie title Friday the 13th that they created the movie title Friday the 13th. Another so when I believe when New Line bought the character of Jason Voorhees, they did not get the title Friday the 13th, which is why the films became Jason X, Jason, those the hell like all of those films, New Line could not, I believe could not legally call them Friday the 13th movies, but they could call them Jason movies. So when it's laying a claim to the Friday the 13th franchise, someone else who wrote the first movie lays claim to creating Jason Voorhees.

Someone who wrote Friday the 13th part two has a claim on Jason Voorhees as the killer of the franchise, and then a totally other person has claimed to Jason Voorhees the guy with the hockey mask for part three, where he gets, so there's like this never ending legal battle of who owns what pieces of this giant piece of pie. And we're out here making the horror movies. This is why if they would just let us have Jason, people who wouldn't be making Steamboat Willie, a slasher film, well, world would be a better place. No, no, Canada is up to nil.

That is the most dangerous lead in soccer. Relax, Mike. See that, Dan? My left eye is switching.

That's my warning eye. It'll be two two by stop, it's time. It's never wrong. With early payout from bet365, I got paid the second thing when I'm two goals.

So to me, it's now the safest lead. Hurley payout from bet365, huh? No, my right eye is switching, Dan. Bet365.

It's an unbelievable feeling when you're enjoying a punch. At the same time, Reacher is enjoying punching people. Wow, he's still punching people. Entertainment meets fast delivery.

Song Prime. And where you're gonna make them watch as well. Well, this is a pretty tough one, and I have to go with a little less obvious. I'm gonna go with, there's nothing out there because they say that twice.

Oh my God. Now would you not see that coming? No, I just don't know. You're gonna steal mine.

It's beautiful. That's nice. Kyle, how about you go next? Okay, so I had initially written down to just play the video game.

Like I really, really enjoyed the Friday 13th game. I feel like it's, it makes sense. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. I'm sorry, the newer game.

I have played in the PlayStation. I liked it a lot, even the single player, because I don't, I'm not gonna pay to play online. No, people, are you fucking kidding? I would pay to not play with people.

Yeah, but actually what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna Never Hike Alone, which was really fucking good. Friday 13th fan film, and it did gangbusters. I mean, they were able to do more of those. And I think Never Hike Alone is a really good companion piece to this.

I am completely blanking right now, but I believe the director of Never Hike Alone has been a guest on our podcast. But I guess, I mean, well, he picked, I'm gonna have to go backwards. He picked demonic toys as the double feature, and that was an episode on, Pub at Master 4. Yes, he joined us for Pub at Master 4.

That's hilarious. I think that was a sign. I still use this template for the spreadsheet for myself and for Letterbox. It's very helpful.

I think that was a sign to him. I don't think you picked up. Hey, if you're gonna come on show, you're gonna have to watch Pub at Master 4, and then he never heard from him again. I was gonna go with the other really, really great remake from this time and go with Bright Knight 2012.

Oh, that's pretty fun. Yeah. You know what else is a really fun time hitting up our Patreon, patreon.com, backslash, hmnpodcast. Scott, it's very appropriate that you mentioned the BioDome thing, because that's literally the episode that's coming out this Saturday.

We're listening to this episode. So check out our BioDome review. It's the longest episode we've ever done of a bonus movie. It was really fun.

We talked nothing about what happens in the movie. Barely, barely discussed the movie. So it's like a normal episode of our podcast. hmnnpodcast.dashery.com to buy some merchandise.

Find us everywhere, including the Letterbox at hmnpodcast.com. And visit our website at hmnnpodcast.com. Now, Scott, what did you watch that you want to give a shout out to? Now, right before we get into that, I have to tell you guys a hilarious little tidbit about this movie that I didn't get to when we were doing the breakdown.

So Travis Van Winkle is Trent, the punchable guy. The same name as his character Trent Demarco from Transformers 2007, which was directed by Michael Bay. According to Michael Bay himself, this is the same character revealing that both Friday 13th 2009 and Transformers 2007 occur in the same universe. Amazing.

Michael Bay. I believe it. Michael Bay walked out of a screen of this set. Too many boobs.

Really? Michael Bay said too many boobs. I mean, he has a lot of boobs. Movies, but he doesn't seem like he's not a person who doesn't want more boobs in his movies.

You know what I mean? Who knows, man? He's not the art that he consumes. I'm surprised.

This movie has a decapitation in it. So why not talk about the fact that I finally watched for the first time ever Highlander, the original Highlander. Ah, I'm never seen it, but I am surprised that this is the first time that you've seen it. I don't know.

I mean, I'd seen a couple pieces of, but I think that the quickening comes up as clips more than the original because I really knew very little about it. And I mean, it's like, I went in blind, I knew that Chris for Lambert wasn't it. I didn't realize that Clancy Brown is like the bad guy. But it was, it's a great movie.

And I have no negative notes. I have no notes. It's crazy. I watched those movies exactly once, probably 15 years ago, when they were all on Netflix at one point.

And Scott, you're basically the same age as me or close to it. Like, I also, I had also never really seen those movies. And it's crazy to me that those are like, we did a geekskate news about this where I was like, of a certain age of like the people who were in their late 30s, early 40s, for whatever reason, we all knew that Highlander was a movie about cutting people's heads off and that you could only, only one could stay standing at the end. Well, I think most of us had never actually watched the movie.

Like, like, that was like the one that it was like, one of those pieces of pop culture that just made it into all of our brains. Yeah, it's about the, it's the competition heavy. Okay. I mean, the whole point noted the capitations, but it's just the basically like, no, I just like the whole element of like the capitations away and out of fantasy element.

And you got high landers. Yeah, it's a wild one. And then the second one, they introduced aliens and then they did a director's cut where they're like, no, no, no, the aliens are part of the such. That's why you watch that one.

That's crazy. Yeah. That's crazy. That's crazy.

It's crazy. I'll do a very quick one because I don't have much to say, you know, there's a handful of movies that are so good, but I will never watch them again, right? And you know, I, how Reddit, hereditary is one of those that I always point to. Oh yeah.

As that I finally watched Bring Her Back, which I think is gonna fall into that. Oh, that's the one in the second. Yeah, like it is, it is masterfully made. I never want to watch that movie again.

I want to bleach my brain from some of the teens scenes. Oh my god. Yeah, it's rough. I'll also just give a quick shout out on the total opposite spectrum because it's not a horror movie, but I also just because it drops recently on HBO Max, I watched if I had legs, I'd kick you.

And similar vein, just so fucking stressful, wonderfully made. Never want to watch it again. Who is that? Is that Rachel Weiss?

Rose. Rose Byrne. Rose Byrne. Rose Byrne.

And I watched it because she got nominated for actress Oscar and well deserved. She's not going to win it, but like very well deserved. But yeah, I mean, it is basically the story of a mother losing her absolute mind because her husband is an absentee husband and she has a daughter that is very, very sick and no one is helping her and thinks that she's a bad parent. So she just keeps spiraling and like getting insomnia and losing her mind.

But Conan O'Brien's in it as her therapist and he just plays it totally straight, which was the other reason why I wanted to watch it. I was like, I want to see Conan O'Brien as a straight traumatic role. Yeah, just out of morbid curiosity. I already do.

He's like, like I said, the movie's good. It's a four star movie. I just never want to sit and watch it again. It's not something to return to.

OK. Now how about you Kyle take us home? I'm going to do a couple of things. I really, really oddball things here.

But I did watch, what's Patterson? Anyways, you Patterson? Jim Jarmerch, Adam Driver. It's, if anybody has watched the Jim Jarmerch film, it's pretty fucking mundane.

Like there's nothing that goes on there. Patterson is one of those, but I think it's maybe the most like elegant, one of the more elegant mundane films that he has and it just follows Adam Driver, who is a bus driver whose name is Patterson, who lives in Patterson, New Jersey. And he drives a bus and it follows his Monday to Sunday pattern of his life. And he's also a poet.

Like he's just trying to be creative at the same time that he's also driving a bus full time. And I think as a creative hetero white man, who's commenting on a creative hetero white man's story about a creative hetero white man, I think we can all sort of, I think there's one of those things where I'm gravitating towards it. It's kind of for me, right? But at the same time, I do appreciate, and this is from 2016.

No, oh, 2016. It's from 2016. So it's been around for a while. It's not.

It did its festival run. It did all these things. It's whatever. But I think for me, and maybe as a new Englander too, it has this really nice, honest view of trying to make things in a blue collar.

You also have to work and live here time and place that I really appreciate. And he's a poet. He keeps like a secret, and not a secret, but he keeps a notebook with him at all times. So he doesn't share his work because he has to go and drive the bus.

And then his like wind down time is going to the same bar for one beer like night after night. Like he has a very creative partner or spouse, but that creative partner spouses, you know, it's a really fun sort of like immerse yourself in these people's lives moment. And if you connect with them cool, if you don't, then it might be too mundane, but it really, Jim Jarmisch has a really great eye for showcasing the mundane and showcasing the norm and showcasing things that are just like bleh. And sometimes you vibe with them and sometimes you don't.

So I watch that. And I think Adam Driver, I really fucking like Adam Driver. And I like him in all, he doesn't have a wide berth of roles, but I like him in pretty much everything that he does. So that was good.

I watch Patterson. I like it a lot. Patterson, starring Adam Bus Driver. Nice.

Fuck yeah. All right, well, we will be back next week continuing franchise February with a real wild one next week. So stay tuned for that. Rose and lasagna, medium power, 15 minutes.
