The passage explains that after teaching the parables, Jesus returned to His hometown where, despite initial amazement, the people rejected Him, illustrating the principles of the kingdom seen earlier—particularly the parable of the sower—where the word is received with joy but falls away due to unbelief (Matthew 13:53–58). It then develops the kingdom principle of forgiveness through the parable of the unforgiving servant, emphasizing that just as God forgives an immeasurable debt, believers must extend mercy to others or face judgment (Matthew 18:23–35). This theme continues with the parable of the workers in the vineyard, showing that God’s grace is given according to His will, not human expectations, so that “the last will be first, and the first last” (Matthew 20:1–16).
