'From Baku to the Amazon: Climate Justice, Finance, and Our Common Future at COP30

In this episode, we bring you a panel discussion titled “From Baku to the Amazon: Climate Justice, Finance and Our Common Future at COP30.” Part of the Wolfson college Sustainability and Conservation Networks, this event reflects on the recent announcements in Belém, which outline a just transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The panel features Counsellor Gunel Salimova from the Embassy of Azerbaijan UK, anthropologist and Jesus College Cambridge Fellow Dr Natalia Buitron, filmmaker and activist from the Amazone biome, Priscila Tapajowara, and serial entrepreneur, impact investor and Wolfson College Fellow Dr Robin Daniels. Together, they discuss climate justice and climate finance, amplify Indigenous perspectives from the Amazon biome, and explore pathways towards a more equitable future for the Global South. *Gunel Salimova is a Political Counsellor atEmbassy of Azerbaijan in the United Kingdom since October 2023.  A career diplomat, Mrs Salimova joined theMinistry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2012 and has since worked in different positions within the Ministry covering the issues related to Azerbaijan’s membership to different international institutions, includingthe United Nations, the Non Aligned Movement and others. Between 2022-2023 she has worked as the Head of Global Risks and Threats Unit within the International Security Department at MFA Azerbaijan. G.Salimova earned her BA in Regional Studies from Baku State University and MA in Diplomacy and International Affairs from Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (ADA University). She is fluent in English, Turkish and Russian languages. She is married with two kids. Dr Natalia Buitron is an anthropologist exploring political subjectivities, indigeneity, and development, specifically how broader political and economic forms interweave with moral transformation in daily life. She has researched, written and taught on a wide range of issues pertaining to indigenous-state relations, (in)equality, intercultural education, writing and childhood. She is a Fellow of Jesus College.Priscila Tapajowara is an indigenous woman from the Amazon biome, born in the ancestral territory of the Tapajó people, Santarém, Pará. She is a filmmaker, and photographer and she was chosen by EFE and Sanchamama as one of the 100 Latinos most committed to climate action in 2023 and 2024. Since 2013, she has been showing the struggle and culture of indigenous peoples through photography and in 2018 she graduated in Audiovisual Production from FAPCOM College, becoming the first indigenous woman to graduate from the institution. In the indigenous communication organisation Mídia Indígena she serves as president and vice-president of the Território da Artes Institute.Dr Robin Daniels is a serial company founder, innovator and impact investor. He is focused on the environmentally sensitive application of technologies and new business models to drive innovation and investment into the global fight against climate change, social inequality and habitat loss.
