From Cop to Politician: Brian Hibbetts on Serving the Las Vegas Community

In this episode of the HEALS Pod, I, Diego Trujillo, had the pleasure of welcoming Brian Hibbetts, a dedicated public servant and current member of the Nevada State Assembly representing District 13. We discussed the transition from law enforcement to politics, with Brian initially having no desire to enter the political arena. However, after retirement, he felt compelled to run for office when he realized that the candidates vying for his district did not align with the needs of the community. This led him to take action rather than remain an "armchair quarterback," a sentiment that resonated throughout our conversation. Brian's insights into the dynamics of Las Vegas, particularly the East vs. West side narrative, provided a unique perspective on the community's evolution. He emphasized the importance of understanding local history and the stories that shape our city, which he experienced firsthand through his interactions with long-time residents and community leaders. As we explored his legislative experience, Brian highlighted the challenges and learning curves he faced as a freshman assemblyman. Brian expressed his determination to advocate for solutions, such as increasing Graduate Medical Education (GME) opportunities and considering the needs of healthcare professionals' families when incentivizing them to work in underserved areas.
