From Defender to Deliverer
from The Truth Church
Bishop Riggen preached from 2 Kings 13:14-19, focusing on the dying prophet Elisha and King Joash. When King Joash came to Elisha, he wept and called him 'the chariot of Israel and the horsemen thereof,' acknowledging Elisha as Israel's greatest defender, more vital than their entire army. However, Elisha refused to dwell on his past role and immediately directed the king to take bow and arrows. With Elisha's hands guiding the king's hands, they shot one arrow through an eastward window, which Elisha declared was 'the arrow of the Lord's deliverance' from Syria. Then Elisha told Joash to take the arrows and smite the ground, but did not tell him how many times. Joash struck only three times and stopped, making Elisha angry because had he struck five or six times, he would have completely destroyed Syria. Bishop Riggen explained that Elisha was transitioning Joash from depending on a defender to becoming a deliverer himself. The prophet could guide the first step, but Joash's own passion and obedience would determine the full victory. The lesson is that the church must look beyond its past defenders and embrace the call to become deliverers, not settling for partial victories but striking until the enemy is fully consumed. The spiritual purpose is to challenge believers to move from passive reliance on spiritual leadership to active, passionate obedience that brings complete deliverance.
