From Democracy to Dystopia: Martial Law, Mythic Control, and the Rise of Authoritarian America
from Before Breakfast · host Kathlene Herberger
In Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, the Republic of Gilead emerges from the ruins of a collapsed United States. The catalyst is a terrorist attack, followed by the declaration of martial law. What begins as a temporary suspension of rights becomes a permanent regime of control, surveillance, and ritualized violence. Though fictional, the scaffolding of Gilead is disturbingly plausible. Today, as the U.S. grapples with political polarization, ecological collapse, surveillance capitalism, and institutional distrust, the specter of martial law no longer feels like distant fantasy. It feels like a potential pivot point. And when paired with real-world blueprints like Project 2025 and Project Esther, the descent into dystopia becomes not just imaginable—but dangerously close.
