From mountain runner to mountain rescue casualty - how Sally Gilson escaped loosing a foot on the fells

from Trail & ultra running from Wild Ginger Running

Thanks so much to Sally Gilson for today’s episode. Four months ago, ultra runner and Wild Ginger Running Patreon Sally badly broke her ankle while on a hike in the Lake District to celebrate her 50th birthday. The damage was so bad she had to be stretchered off the hill by Keswick Mountain Rescue. They had to put her foot agonisingly back in place on the hill quickly or she risked losing it altogether. After surgery, two pins and a metal plate, Sally’s bone is gradually fusing back together but she is navigating a life without running for a good while. She was aiming for a 100 miler this summer but crewed for her buddy instead. We caught up with Sally to find out more about her accident, her subsequent recovery and how she’s coping with being a runner who can’t run for possibly a whole year.
