From Scarcity to Abundance: Regenerating Land, Money & the Way We Live (with Eddy Garcia)

from Regenerative Business with Sam Garcia · host Erin West, Eddy Garcia

This one's a little different. This episode is an interview that Eddy and I did with Erin West of Humans Who Trade — and it turned into one of my favorite conversations we've ever had on record. We start with the land. Eddy grew up on Molokai, has been farming since he was a kid, and has spent decades regenerating depleted, chemically-destroyed soil back into thriving ecosystems — in some cases in a fraction of the time nature would do it alone. He talks about what it actually looks like to walk onto a dead piece of land and bring it back: observation, earthworks, pioneer plants, mycelium networks, the whole thing. And then Erin does what she does best — she draws it all out as a metaphor for our collective relationship with money, enoughness, and scarcity. We get into monocropping as a metaphor for how most people run their finances (and their businesses). The difference between meaningful work and a meaningless job. Why gifting economies feel so uncomfortable to modern people — and what that discomfort is actually pointing to. The James Dean effect and how we lost 90% of our farmers in two generations. What stewardship actually means. And what it feels like to live in an environment where nature is doing the majority of the work, once you've done the setup. This conversation is earthy and philosophical and practical all at once. It'll make you want to go touch some dirt. What if the way you relate to money looks exactly like a monocrop? In this episode, my husband Eddy Garcia and I sit down with Erin West of Humans Who Trade to talk about regenerating depleted land on Maui — and why that process is a perfect mirror for how we move from scarcity to true abundance in every area of life.
